Part 5: Sir Mego Stone and the Invasion of Vesper
There was a noticeable absent at the tournament. Mego Stone, widely regarded as the mightiest warrior in the land, did not compete. Yet was he not as deserving of the honor as those knighted? When trouble arose, he was the first called. He had won back the possessions stolen from fallen warriors. Even a short list of his deeds becomes overwhelming. If any man was deserving of knighthood, it was Mego Stone. The Queen agreed and sent Duncan, Bishop of the Virtues, to honor Mego Stone with a title. The title only added to his legend, Sir Mego Stone becoming the fourth Knight of the Queen.
It was shortly after the knighting ceremony that evil threatened once more. Rumors of trolls had spread like wildfire. Sir Mego Stone, accompanied by Magus, Legion, Arcanum, and Felix Majen, journeyed to Vesper to check the veracity of the rumors. No trolls were in sight. While pondering their next move, a message arrived from Janey and she was gated over. The decision was made to hunt elsewhere.
No sooner had they departed from the town than death screams filled the air. The trolls were attacking! The capital was the obvious target, so the group traveled there. Only silence met them. The rumors of Vesper being attacked must be true. While most of the group gated there, Mego had been separated and was forced to run the long road. Upon his arrival, he found his earlier companions and Xavier already engaged in melee with the trolls, as well as demons and worse. Janey and Legion fell before the horde. Rykus added his sword to the town's defense and the horde was slowly driven back.
Finally, the source of the evil was discovered. A moongate as black as midnight cut like a scar through the sky. As Mego Stone walked closer, two more demons stepped forth. Wearily, he lifted his sword and cried, "For Britain and the Queen!" From behind, a voice echoed this cry; Tarian McCord, first Knight of the Queen, had arrived. Together they charged the demons, quickly slaying them. While most of the heroes made a clean sweep of the city, Felix and Mego stepped through the gate, finding a gathering of trolls and demons around an evil altar. At the foot of the altar stood a huge black troll. It declared itself the new king of Vesper as it charged. The rest of the group chose that moment to follow through the gate. Blade met blade, with magic aiding the heroes. In short time, the "new king" was a smoldering corpse. Mego Stone and his triumphant companions stepped back through the gate moments before it closed. Once more, the minions of Gizash had been defeated.
