Bested by Brigands

Postby Marius the Black on Mon Feb 23, 2004 11:10 pm

The Short:

Arafennaswen and Belmont encountered a resistance that cost them Arafennaswen's life, and almost Belmont's. A rescue was in order.

The Long:

Belmont and his boon companion Arafennaswen were travelling the roads between Britian and Trinsic, enjoying the sights and splendours of the road. Belmont had been this way as of late, as he'd often patrolled the roads to ensure that monsters were kept free of the most travelled paths. In particular, he'd encountered the Brigands before, and been forced to withdraw, when too many of their spell-slinging number cowardly employed attacks from afar. He warned Arafennaswen of his experiences, urging them both to make a pass around the side of the road, to avoid the bulk of the occupying force.

And then disaster struck.

The Wizards, obviously knowing of the noble knight and deft ranger's plans, had kept a number off to the side, where they struck with fierce and punitive force. Arafennaswen was ravaged by spells and Belmont and his fine steed were surrounded by brigands armed with weapons, forcing him to hack his way to his companion. They were separated.

Arafennaswen fought nobly, but fell in the confusion. Belmont, hoping she had made it through the pass, surged ahead to freedom, only to hear the cry of his companion as she fell. He turned to spur his horse back into battle, but the brigands had already formed lines against him, but he charged anyway.

The fighting was fierce. Again Belmont was surrounded, and though he fought bravely, his was a losing battle. Grasping the fine war horn at his side, he blew a trill note into the sky, calling forth any nearby and brave heroes. And that is when the cavalry arrived.

None less than Tre en Wildwood and Leodoc Hale appeared in person, felling the cowardly brigands with their fierce magics in much the same way the Brigands had slain Arafennaswen before. Bolstered by his companions, Belmont led the rout, driving back any bold brigands who might strike dishonourably at the mages, cutting them down as they passed him.

Rhys Duir arrived not long after, and he with his dragon Arkanis, helped wipe the existence of the brigands from the face of noble Britannia as easily as dust from a doorstep. All the gratitude Belmont and Arafennaswen can muster is given to these heroes, who acted nobly and selflessly in a manner befitting a World of Dreams. Such heroic acts shall to be announced - and praised - as they come along.

Arafennaswen and her dragon were brought back to life, and the mages disappeared as humbly and honourably as they had appeared. Belmont and Arafennaswen continued along the road, and on to their next journey.

And yet, above it all, alone and brooding in his tower, a subtle shadow cursed the death of his brigand army, drawing their souls back into a black cauldron that lie at his feet. Oh, he would have his revenge, but for now he would bide his time...

Mwahahahahahaha!

once in a while 12 of the 15 baddies spawned are magey sorts. if your MR is under 110 that gets rather dicey rather quickly.

Simon,

while I can feign interest in just how well-developed your fighting skills are, I don't see a need to compare myself to you. In any case, the essence of this encounter wasn't for the sake of who was stronger than who, it was written to reflect the heroic nature of fellow players. That someone could die to 'worthless' monsters (as you put it) and still have the assisstance of fellow players is truly admirable.

I intend to continue writing about events like these, though they do not neccessarily fall into what might be considered (a default) "Quest". In particular, I want to highlight those willing to go on quests, and their their noble efforts. A tradition of writing up fond memories and accounts allows us to share them with others, and so that one good deed and the society grows as a whole.

These events that I write about are not bragging rights. They are not designed to showcase just how magnificent [my characters] can be. They are not a shallow attempt at looking for praise, attention and recognition. I have someone very special in my life that puts up with me on those matters. :)

These posts are designed to show what a wonderful place WoD is. I am more than a little disheartened that I read your response (simon) as "Tough luck, there. Try fighting something worth my interest and respect."

Now, if this isn't your intention, I apologise. But the matter is that Crozius seemed to have a similar response, and while I won't speak for Ehran, he seemed to diplomatically handle the matter as well.

In any case, I'll be sure to try and keep these events of WoD that I'm a part of up as much as I can, to set a good example and reward players kind enough to rescue me (yet again!).

Also, I love foreshadowing Marius' return in each of them, so you can look forward to that as well.

I for one enjoyed your post. To me, it did embody the spirit of WoD, and I will continue to read the posts you do.

I am not saying anything against others posts, though, so do not flame me for agreeing with Marius in this. Even though I do disagree with his ultimate aims *grin* I would probably have a tough time with the mages there right now, myself, as young in the world as I am now. Later on, I hope to find if I can handle those guys, but right now I plan on showing them my heels!

lol, that was not my point, my point was that with 100 MR i had no trouble with them... i wasn't trying to show anyone up, in fact at the time i was doing this, you done your rescue at the other outpost, i sent an offer of help, but they never replied

You never mentioned in your post that you had 100 resist. That might have helped :).

Nice try Simon. IMHO, you said exactly what you meant in your first post. Simply put, you said, "Why would you write about something as trivial as fighting Brigands. They are nothing" "I am able not only to clear the outpost, but am also able to withstand an unexpected respawn."

Your second post was a feeble attempt to stem the tide of negative reactions to your first post.

Thank you Marius for the reposte. I thoroughly enjoyed the tale.

yes, i'm dirty, mean, mighty unclean.... i'd do something that underhanded.... M's post are the best i was in no way putting her down sunshine.... mearly stating the fact that they are some what easy, gazers do more damage, and that Brigands don't give virtue.

I've done tons of resuces my self, and offered help in this case, but i didn't get a reply, more then likely bcuz M was on the job

of course tristan, i think the great point here is, ask not what World Of Dreams can do for you, but rather what you can do for it.

I think you are missing the point entirely, Simon. The tale Marius told had zero to do with the ease or difficulty, virtue or lack of virtue of the baddies that they were fighting. It had nothing to do with your willingness to help, or their lack of response to your offer of help.

It was a tale of heroism and triumph. And you chose to rain on that particular parade.

And I'm not sure, I could be wrong. But did you just take a crack at me for not being willing to "do" for The World of Dreams?

of course tristan, i think the great point here is, ask not what World Of Dreams can do for you, but rather what you can do for it.

I think I would like an explanation for this excerpt. If it is a crack at me, well, then it is apparent that you do not know me at all.
