I started playing Ultima 6 or 7 years ago, can't remember exact date, but I do remember that I started on the Catskills Shard and it had only been up a week at the time. A friend of my played and got me into it.
However, I quit playing after about 6 months because a PK clan moved in, I think they called themselves The Red Death, and I got killed and looted a couple of times and I decided I didn't want to pay a fee to get killed and looted several times a month.

Flash to March 2003:
Yusen Kayl, a coworker of mine, and I were talking about old games and he mentioned that he still played Ultima on a free shard. So he showed me the WOD dreams webpage. I read through the manual and really liked the Non-pk rules and the friendly environment. I signed up that week and I have been playing fairly regularily since then.

After watching me play for several months my fiance, Naelyan Dracona, also joined WOD.

Don't these little tales just give you the warm fuzzies.

One little thing that irks is that Homer keeps referring to himself as an "idjit". I've never gotten to know Homer in any real way but his postings on the boards over the years have demonstrated humour and grace despite temptation i am sure from time to time. Hardly the work of an "idjit" imnsho.

How I came to be here... hmm

Well I ran into WoD completely by accident , I was playing this really awful free shard with three players logged in at peek times. So I looked up the UO top 200 link off the site to see what else is "out there". I was looking for a shard with the qualities advertised on the WoD website and signed on.

I played on OSI Chessy Shard since 1999, after a year or so of utter frustration I quit. I missed UO but I did not want to go back to OSI, so I discovered Player Ran Shards. The Dark Side was my first, it had alot of neat stuff, but bad bad GMs so i quit and hit the top 200 list. I played many many PRS but none of them were sturdy, they would drop all the time.

I didn't find UO in a top 200 list, I was just doing a Yahoo search and came upon the webpage.

It took a while for us to apply cuz we didn't have a real email. I would just sit and read the manual, the more I read the more I wanted in.
It was unlike anything I had experienced and have been hooked ever since.
Now my Son and Hubby both play here .

My husband made me. I was a text-based role player. No little moving pictures for me, thanks. I thought it took away from the imagination and creativity of the game. *Scoff* That's like comparing Scrabble to a PS2 game. Two different things.

Anyway, I had been trying my luck at online gaming. Unfortunately I delved into my first venture of public gaming with Diablo II. There are some twelve year olds out there that need some serious psycho-therapy! Those little kids tore me up!

My husband got tired of coming home every evening and seeing me sniffling on the couch cause some little hormonal driven pre-teen had befriended me, stole my quest item then killed me. He wanted us to play a "family-oriented" game together and thought I'd like UO so he started looking for a free shard with just the qualifications that WOD had. I was skepticial but he is my husband and he does know me better than I know myself most of the time, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Of course, he was right.

I played OSI for years (started in the old days when there was no such thing as Felucca/Trammel and every day hunting was a quest to not get killed and looted). I eventually got disillusioned with the changes to the game and left. I started playing Dark Age of Camelot, and in the course of that, started missing UO.

My young cousin also expressed an interest in playing, so I decided to look for a player-run shard which had strict enforced rules and a family-oriented environment. I found WoD on the list of shards, checked it out, and here I am.

Forsooth ye varlet...or is that varmint? I always get those two confused. Ahem, methinks I digress.

Aye, thou wert indeed accurate, e'en to a hairsbreadth. Hither be little usage of proper speech.

Verily, t'is a rare occasion when yon knight (or is that knave, I always get those two confused.) speaketh correctly and with a decided flair that is most pleasing to the ear. Oft times I heareth words of strange and curious origins that assault mine ears with discordancy.

Alas, there must be a reason for such a sad state of affairs. I have studied virtual tomes for the answer and came across this:

Therein lies the rub, t'is the cloven footed one that forceth me to accomplish the dastardly deed. (the devil made me do it)

How I came to inhabit the World of Dreams

How I Came To Inhabit The World Of Dreams
by Bayn

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....umm, wait, wrong story.

*feverishly searches for the right notes*

Alriiiighty then...let me start over.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, there was an adventurer known as the Feral Knight. This man was a veteran of countless battles on countless worlds and dimensions. His favorite dimension was one that was once called Sosaria and later, Brittania. He had been known as Alaric for uncounted years but had adopted a new name when he entered a strangely familiar but radically different Brittania that was known as UO.

FK thrilled to wander the world of his past again. But there were differences. In previous incarnations, he had been able to magically Restore himself to a point in time as long as he remembered to Save at that point. Thus, if he died by mischance, he could try again. That didn't work here in UO. There were other differences as well. There were downright nasty people in this shard known as Atlantic who preyed upon anyone or anything that moved.

Regardless, he stayed in the realm of Atlantic for over three years. He reached the uttermost heights of his ambition and reveled in glory and wealth. When the revelling got boring, he would vanish from the world, sometimes giving away all his possessions and slaying his avatars. But, he was always drawn back and he would start anew, building up to the uttermost heights once again.

He finally decided that the player killing, the abusive players, the abusive gods of OSI, were too much. He was mortally tired now and vowed to leave Atlantic forever. Instead of simply giving away vast wealth, towers, houses and magical items to friends and strangers as he had done before, he contacted the jolly god known as Ebay and made a substantial profit on his account!

His whereabouts during the endless time that passed after this are lost in the mists of time but one thing is certain. His love for Brittania could not be totally quenched. He would not return to Atlantic but instead he searched for other shards of the World that was shattered.

He briefly inhabited some miscellaneous shards but found no deep empathy for them. One day though, he encountered the World of Dreams and from deep inside him, in the very core of his being, he heard a soft sigh as if he had returned home after a long, long absence.

He shall he stay until time withers.

I was playing UO. Mostly Drachenfels but sometimes on Chesepeake. That was laggy and stupid. Hey, look.. I'm on a purple bug that acts as a pack horse...purple bug, gimme a break.. and the ant invasion.. My biggest thrill on the OSI shards was finally getting onto the roof of the southern Brit bank.
So I had gotten in with this rather lousy group on Chesepeake who were really pathetic, but it was nice being in a group.. And one female tells me I should try Acordia, it's really sweet, you'll love it.

Yeah right. You can max every skill and every stat, custom houses and custom races. PK everywhere. I hung out at the Brit healer all the time. Occasionally I would run to the blacksmith shop, but then I'd have to go get rezzed. Also, people said stuff like ownz joo and l33t. What the #%$&# is that???? Dumb.

So I started looking for a good shard with NO PKing, because PKing is stupid. And I wanted to find a place where roleplaying was possible and people were friendly. And I wanted my wife to play. So I started browsing the web and WoD was the first web site I visited that said they did not allow PKing. So I joined. Then I made my wife join, and then I talked some others into joining.

Both my husband and I played OSI for 4 years and were total addicts but paying for 2 accounts for that long got to be rediculous so we started looking at the free shards. Quit OSI and started playing free shards and eventually staffed on a free shard for over a year. We got knocked offline (rl really interferes with uo sometimes) for several months and when we got back online that shard had changed and I really had no interest in going back. Arkady resumed talking with some friends of ours on Yahoo and both Michael Atticus and Jazzy told us of this wonderful shard they had found called World of Dreams. Arkady applied to give it a shot, while I on the other hand thought there was no way that a shard could be as great as Michael kept describing it so I waited. Arkady got accepted and started playing. After school was over for the day and the kids went to play I came and watched Ark playing WOD. Suddenly I was jealous and wanted my own account seeing that what Michael had been telling us was true. Was the longest 3 days I have ever waited but on Monday there was my reply in the mail and I logged on. I have to say, when we started staffing on that shard I looked at alot of other servers not really wanting to play my normal character as much on the one I was staff ..... and by far this is the best free server in my opinion that is out there. I vote daily because in my opinion it should be in that #1 slot. The one that is currently there is NO WHERE NEAR the quality of WOD. I'm hooked and I'm here for good :D Hope to have many happy hunts with all of you

I thought I'd revive this old thread

Rather than nice flowing sentences, its going to appear more like a scrape book.

I started playing UO in Oct of '97 ( within 2 weeks of the public release ). Shortly thereafter I started reading the newsgroup to here rumors of the latest gimmicks and exploits in order to keep them from happening to me.

In Jan of '98 Dundee posted his first message. Shortly after he posted his third, I was out near the Vesper/Minoc moongate gathering feathers. I saw his name go by. I chased him down. I quess I forgot to mention that I didn't ussually hang out in that area, 'cause he later mentioned he had swung back by looking for me.

Later he was looking to have him and shade purchase a house and needed funds. It was then I first met Shade, who thought that I and Jaq(?) were crazy giving them large amounts of gold :P Not long after they realized how rediculously ease gold making was.

Anyway I, and my friend Aria, helped them out with thier first guild and later a second one they set up(TNO, and SBR).

Eventually Dundee moved on to help create WOD. He gave me an invitation to the shards early days. I got frustrated at the logon process back then and gave up, and I was involved the Yew Rangers. After the Yew Rangers fell apart, I met my first involuntary death to a PK. Two years of avoiding such a fate, and this one hurt. Wanting to put the YR breakup and the PK incident behind me I wrote to Dundee asking if the invitation was still good and joined WOD in Dec of 99.

I soon drug Aria and some others that helped us build a castle along. Then later, I was talking to Jadesfyre and invited here. Many YR's followed, such as Big Ed, Pink Ranger. And later I convinced some members of the HaN guild to give it a try.

Now the slightly dark side. When jobbing came to be, it was so foriegn to my playstyle it felt like torture. The ironic thing is, I felt it was a necessary change, and couldn't think of a better alternative. So I faded into the darkness. Now after having been in DAoC I can tolerate it some now I see. Although truth be known, when Im jobbing I run little errands here at home.

My return was sparked by my interest in how the place had grown/evovled. I must say I quite pleased it is still a wonderful place.
