The Dream Singer

From The World of Dreams Manual

SAGA OF THE DREAM

Dreamsinger

The first man wept at his birth;

Humanity's curse was the cause.

Unbidden, his mind's eye kept seeing

His world without all its flaws.

Man's mind reaches out through his hand-

The world he envisions to build;

But hopes far outreach his skills,

And the vision is never fulfilled.

And so, mankind patches and plugs

In a world seen replete with mistakes

And when someone wearies of striving,

They withdraw to a world the mind makes.

Chorus:

Is there a land that is filled with adventure?

Where there is plenty of friendship and space?

Where the Gods truly look after the people?

The World of Dreams is that place.

Man built worlds out of color on cave walls,

Later shared them in art and in verse,

All manner of creations to flee to-

Some better than "real"- and some worse.

Illusionary worlds have become more compelling,

The detail and involvement have grown,

Until in the dreamworld of Lord British:

Dreamt people had dreams of their own.

(Repeat Chorus)

Is there any pain worse than no dreams?

There is- as Sosarians learned.

When a dream warps awry of its promise:

When a dream into nightmare is turned.

Such a dream was that of Lord British.

His good subjects were saddened and grieved.

They dreamed; at first one by one;

Then slowly a shared dream was weaved.

(Chorus)

Yet the dream was a roiling cloud:

Insubstantial and with shape undefined.

Until four special dreamers gained focus-

Through their power of will and of mind.

It was Dundee who perceived all the detail;

And how to repair what was wrong.

While it was Preacher who gave the dream substance

And made the illusion grow strong.

Av painted the dream with her colors,

Sprinkling on beauty and art-

While Shade gave her caring and love:

Adding a soul and a heart.

(Chorus)

Four dreamers supporting the Dream:

A new world in new time and new space.

Born and called "World of Dreams"

And they were the Gods of the place.

But the Dream was still varied to each;

Too great for just one mind to embrace.

Fragmented, it could not be shared,

So Preacher began his great chase.

(Chorus)

Legend said one mind was greatest:

Across many worlds spread its fame.

A benevolent dragon possessed it:

And "Server" was that Dragon's name.

But the dragon didn't speak English,

And Preacher couldn't talk skink.

They tried many ways to make contact:

'Til a language called POL made the link.

Then the four went to work on the details,

And one by one friends joined the land.

Together they filled it with heroes,

And at last their Dream was in hand.
