The reality of hosting WoD

Post by Laephis » Mon Dec 05, 2011 3:55 am

Bottom line up front: server hosting is expensive (both in time and money) and it's unlikely that I'll be able to continue.

When I brought WoD back online in July, I had an easy (real-life) job and a lot of free time. Things changed drastically when I took a new job in Sept. I had to change my routine (getting up at 5am everyday) and a huge chunk of my free time vanished. I also took a look at the amount of money I was spending to keep things running. It's $35/month for the server. That's over $400/year on a single game. I simply can't sustain that kind of recurring cost in light of my family's needs. When I was running WoD from 2002-2004, I had a dedicated DSL line with a static IP and was able to run the server from my home. Unfortunately, I don't have that option in my current home.

On Dec 13th my server hosting plan expires. I've delayed saying anything mostly because I hate announcements like these. It gets old after a while, doesn't it? In any case, I've let Agata know about it and some contingency plans are being kicked around. As always, I'm open to other ideas and suggestions.

PS. The website hosting is completely separate (and totally cheap) and will not be going away. Ever.

Maybe we can set up donations to cover the $35/month?

I would have no issue donating, Laephis. If we had 7 people per month each paying $5 each that covers it, right? Or even if we had 35 people each donate $1 each. You can definitely sign me up.

So if you or Agata can host and we can get the donations to cover the expenses are we good?

I will gladly chip in to keep the server up and running, no question about it.

Thanks everyone for your generosity. I hesitate to take any donations, but I'm willing to give it a shot to see what happens. At the very least it may give us another couple months to decide what options we have. My Paypal email address is laephis [at] yahoo (dot) com. I haven't used it in ages, so hopefully it still works.
