The Gathering

Postby Greywolfe on Wed Jun 18, 2003 8:11 am

High atop the Arcane Sanctuary on Moonglow Isle, some of the most gifted Wizards and Sorceresses from throughout the land gathered for a meeting to discuss the future of our craft. It was truly a pleasure to sit amongst such talented and wise souls. The energy exuded by this force was so immense that you could practically see it in the air. Once the group had settled in, Cahir addressed the purpose for summoning.

Several days prior Cahir and I met at that very tower in hopes of developing an idea. Our goal was to call forth a meeting to propose a unification of the mages. We envisioned a place where all mages could come together to share in our knowledge of the art, to train the young and to invigorate the old. This was not an altogether new concept, but we felt the timing was right to readdress the concept.

As Cahir later mentioned at the meeting, “Cove asked me the other day what the purpose of this ‘Mages Tower’ would be, and I came up with 4 things. First: to promote better understanding of the magic arts in WoD. Second: to provide a place for mages to hunt/quest together. Third: to foster a sense of community among the mages. And fourth: to have fun.â€

Aye, was a grand gathering indeed. Let me think: Ronin, Cloudchaser, Kahji, Rederick, Sable, Edison, Felix, Cahir, Augur, Greywolfe and yours truly. I think that was everyone.

At first I didn't like the idea of starting a new character from scratch (primarily because it means the end of one of my established family members), as Ronin proposed, but the more the concept and reasoning was explained, the more I grew to like it. Those of us who do this will all have at least one "newbie" character and together, we will grow as a team or family of mages. I was kidding Grey about having ten "roommates" at the Tower but in effect, that is what we will be doing. Moonglow, the city of Mages throughout history, will be our home and base of operations. Truly an exciting concept!

Also, Sable's idea has a lot of us who have relied on buffs and jewelry and scrolls very intrigued. Imagine taking Wind or Fire or Buc's Den with just your regs, staff and basic leather armor. Imagine the sense of accomplishment, the feeling of pride when you survey the victory without having used any of the more "modern" accessories. This will be a test of a mage's cunning, planning, tactics and teamwork with his/her fellow mages and I am very much looking forward to that.

The meeting adjourned with much anticipation on all sides. I cannot wait for the next meeting to see what new and exciting ideas the group has conjured.

Dang it. I'm really sorry I missed it :( When is the next meeting going to be held? I would really like to be able to create a mage character to join and have the chance to train from the beginning with some of the best players here...is this opportunity open to all mages?

I think we will decide that at the next meeting. There are several ideas on the table, some will be open to all mages (new and old), others we have to discuss.

An essential part of the overall Fellowship of Mages is to help mentor less experienced mages -- take them on hunts, share strategies, help get them established, etc.

The idea of starting a new mage (for some of us by deleting an existing character) was one of the ideas proposed to generate interest for established "oldby" mages. We have to set down the rules for that and agree when to start. Some of the rules proposed were: Start in Moonglow and (at least at first) stay in Moonglow; No vendor or guard quests; No jobbing; Equipment from other characters on the same account will not be shared with this new character via the bank; The only equipment we use (including scrolls/spells) is what we find there and share with each other; Crafted items from within that group (including copies of scrolls) can be shared. Once we have agreed on the guidelines and a date to start, we will share that information.

The other main idea to generate "oldby" interest was to do a "naked" hunt -- which means we use our existing mages, strip off all magics (including jewelry and magic armor/weapons) and go raid the Brigands to get their armor , then go on to take on Wind or some other dungeon. Obviously potions, bandages, spellbooks and regs would be allowed, but no scrolls. The idea is to fight with our wits and practice strategy. Not sure when this will happen. The end of the month was suggested but we probably need to have another meeting to solidify it.

In the meantime, until the next meeting, it would be a great help if people would try to think up interesting activities for old/new mage combinations and ideas to keep the "oldbies" interested too. :)

Congratulations Greywolfe, your Arcane Sactuary looks promising. It's a shame I wasn't there. I'm not exactly an 'oldbie' but it would have been nice.

Though the way you put it, your Arcane Sanctuary seems like a Country Club for established mages. :)

(just a little joke there)

But it should be nice.

Would you like a tower somewhere on Moonglow that serves as the Library? :D

If so, let me know.

On the contrary, Marius the tower is going to be for all mages. However, we realize that in order to keep it a thriving establishment it was important to get feedback of some of our older mages. The first meeting was basically just to get a handle on how much interest there was from the older community. The second meeting is going to be open to all mages I believe.

A good portion of our discussion focused on how to attract the younger mage, and I think we got a lot of great ideas started.

I am figuring we are going to need a week or two to digest the current ideas and come up with a few fresh one. Therefore I would expect the next meeting to be either late this coming week or early the following.

I am definitely interested in participating. I am still a fledgling necromancer, and would welcome the tutelage of experienced mages.

I have yet to place a home, so I am open to placing my home within a community of mages as well, if possible.

This is awsome..I have been on a "Naked" hunt before I joined Wod..We could only show up in a robe, (nothing under it). We were given basic leathers to wear, a pouch with 200 each regs, a few heal potions, bandaids and kindlings our packs were to be empty except these items and a spell book. It was the most fun I had in a long time. The char I used for the hunt was 3 years old. It was just awsome I felt like a newbie going on my first hunt in the graveyard I would recomend it to all veteran mages/wizards :D

A place for mages has been a long time coming in the World of Uo..I have been all for some sort of Mage guild I think its the ill guided Idea that mages don't care if they get virtue or titled like Tanks do when they join the guards.
I would really like to see a title system set up for mages. To have the sense of acomplishments that the Tanks get in their virtue guards. Of course this is a dream and something higher ups would have to consider.
I to am not exactly a "oldbie" here on Wod but I would very much so be willing to join and help younger mages get started I would also love to learn from more experienced mages "the ways of the world".
The Idea to start another mage from scratch is a fabulous one i think it would be interesting to progress with other mages.
Thanks for listning

I must agree that the mages guild is an excellent idea. Unfortunately work interfered and I could not attend the first meeting.

When I opened my account on WOD, I had never played Ultima Online and was truly a newbie. Greywolfe took me on as a apprentice mage and the knowledge that he has shared with me has been invaluable. Being a mage can be a difficult, confusing, and frustrating task if you have no direction or counseling. I believe that this concept would encourage players to engage in magery and also make them more successful at it.

The ideas that were brought up at the meeting are very interesting and will be fun when acted out. I personnally can't wait to see where this all goes! :)

We had something like this before... I still have my "I survived the Buc's Den challenge and all I got was this stupid cup" mug from the Buc's Den challenge... we do need another one of those, it was lots of fun.
