Moonglow, the early years

Postby Adroi Andune on Fri May 28, 2004 11:10 pm

With this note, I'm trying to pass along old shard history from my perspective, and maybe a feeling of how or why things are done the way are. It will not be in much in character though.

Prologue: I'm not sure how many of the Old Old Oldies even know this, but I'm very much a loner. Not all due to choice mind you. It is that I just don't like being in Britan, where most people are, because I never liked Britan. I hang out in Moonglow and love talking to people who come there. Not many do. When I started on this shard in Dec of '99, I once again started in Moonglow and lived there. The problems of Britan were far away. This meant I missed the Christmas party that year, I was actually bummed, but understood I was not where everyone else, so my loss ( nice runon sentence eh :?: :) ). Things might have been different on this shard if I hadn't beaten Arc to the purchase of the house I had in Moonglow. Moonglow may have been more reflective of Mag right now.

The decision:

In any case, it was decided by the powers that be that Cove was not a good settling point for players, so Orc after Orc were pushed upon them until they relented and were forced to leave. Debate over where to go arose. When they decided to come to Moonglow, out of self preservation for some piece of what I loved about Moonglow I asked if I could be Mayor.

It Started:

So it started, we had weekly meetings and people would go on hunts afterwards. The meetings at first were more like a getting to know you deal. Then one day I step into the hedges teleporter to go to my home near the Lyceum. WTF! Im being assaulted by all sorts of Trolls. The defenders are rustled up and the intial invasion is beat back. Afterwards they divy up the treasure, and ask me if I want mine. My response was no, but if they wanted me to have it, put it in the city cofers. Soon the position of treasurer was born as the Trolls seemed to disklike our meeting ground, and grew jealous of the fact that we had been graced with a stone table and chair for our meeting hall.

The treasury grows:

The trolls continue to visit and the treasury gets bigger as everyone is now donating to the city cofers. We even venture out when the trolls fail to show up and collect taxes from other sources. Many voices were asking for this or that in Moonglow, so we called people together and spoke as one large voice. At one time there was a nice park next to the armoury at the south entrance to the gated area. It became an item issue and and was gone in a week :(

Regatta and the Mall:

The treasury was now very large. So a regatta was planned and executed by my placing vendors all over the map and telling the boaters where the first one was, and they got directions from the vendors along the way. The winner, sorry I don't remember who, was given 100K in gold. The Mall was created by us paying the GM's to make the houses available for players wanting to place vendors. I'm sadden by the fact this place has gone to such dissarry. Since I've been playing again I have yet to see more then one of those vendors with anything to sell or willing to buy anything. How long do those vendors last? They just seem like a waste of good space now.

The center didn't hold:

Well all good things must come to an end. Ackadia arose and jobbing was born. Many of the defenders got distracted with Ackadia. I personally could not deal with jobbing. So a new mayor and treasurer were elected ( since the treasurer was leaving to ). Sorry those names are lost to me, also. They were given the reigns of leadership and I didn't log back onto WoD for 3.5 years...

It occured to me I left out the mention of what made the trolls go away. This was a very big quest, involving at least 20 people. I don't remember many of the details, what I do remember is:

We got stalled at a choke point. To Kyrianna and I stood at the door way, her to cast magic and I to shoot with my bow. Healers behind us. What to our surprise  happend?

The door was flung open and in less then 1 second Kyr and I both saw black screens... then all of Hades broke loose...

Adroi
I remember the troll invasions of Moonglow. I came into the WoD right about Feb, 2000. Unfortunately I didnt make it to the finale of the troll invasion but I do recall trying to beat up one troll at a time back then since I was just a youngster and too weak to take on hordes of trolls as I do now. Yes, those times are kind of hazy to me now but reading your post has me remembering it a little more.
Thanks for posting, it brought back some memories hehe

I do remember the Moonglow Regatta, the troll invasions, the Cove Rebels, and even the Moonglow group who sided with Gizash (Magus was one of them, as was I in a limited fashion, but darn if I can remember anyone else) to create the Chaos Guards.

If I recall correctly, the Cove residents were up in arms demanding a banker from Dundee who flat out refused based on the fact that Cove is an outpost not a real town. (sorry for the run-on there, I had a bit to drink tonight)

Wasn't there an arena errected in Moonglow for a battle to determine the Queen's top warrior?

I may not play as much as some, but I do try to keep up on the history. I stroll through the Fellowship Hall on occasions (kinda easy since it's right across from my houses), I visit the Queen's Castle to pay my respects, and I'm due for a visit to Serpent's Hold since it's been forever since I've been there.

Anyway, I've rambled enough for my intoxicated self. WoD's history must be maintained even if it's the vague recollections from those of us still here.

As a fellow loner, Adroi, I think we should form a club of sorts. We wouldn't have to worry about meetings, or hunting together since we prefer our sole company. LOL

:)

Just kidding of course. If you feel like hunting, please give me a yell. I'm not on much and I certainly won't talk your ear off, but it would still be a hoot to gather some of the oldbies together for a hunt or two.

Ah now ya got me started haha!

Remember when (not exactly chronological order):

-Harm was the best spell in the book? (better than ebolt or lightning) Those orc kings would agree with me.

-We could med in plate? (remember the big debate, no mage tanks, a lot of people upset when that change went in)

-Your home recall point was the Britain Castle (and you had to recall on yourself)?
Note: before that we would recall on runes like public shards.

-No one had a full spellbook?

-They took recall away without warning (recalling on runes)? At the time we had bought the house on the north end of NJ, it took me all day to get off the island. I was stranded anyway. Huge debate again.

-Pet polar bears were Special? (they came from a land far far away)

-Yew graveyard was a popular hunting ground?

-Reagents came in loot unstacked (and we didn't have yoink, or we did and it wouldnt automatically stack)?

-Skills and stats had no cap?

-That crazy Ent ran just as fast as you did oOOOooooOO

-That spider web was permanently sticky? (hahaha had to page a gm for that one)

-Polymorph actually turned you into cool things like ogres, ettins, ents, gargoyles... (the wisp gave the best stats)

-you could fish in a water tile inside the old bank (Homer might remember that one)

-you could carry your forge (and anvil) in your pack while you mined and just smelted it here and there right in your pack so you wouldnt be too heavy to walk

-We had a quest (one of the first)on Buc Den- Shade had to gate us all there. I think there were about 6 of us. Everyone died, so Shade had to res us all. We got Really cool loot though: tables, chairs, and other cool deco stuff. It was a blast anyway.

-We didn't have a virtue system?

-I think I recall that we used to make exceptional clothing.

-T2A was open- but nothing was there (no mobs). You'd just get stuck in the artwork (I'm sure I wasn't the only one haha)

-We had useage based skill increase (or however you say that) I remember macroing tinkering glass bottles all night (for skill), I could hear it in my sleep.

and lastly (for now),
-You could make Hellfire anything, and I put a bunch on some wooden shields you could carry them in your pack and just use them like that (didn't have to equip).. double click, then target the bad guy. And it was Instantaneous, no delay between charges! Handed them out to folks for "The Beast" quest (DaBogmu was there), some dragons on an island we had to sail to. I had one left when Gizash showed up at Cove one night. Used the shield on him and we killed him. We looted that cool "True Black" armor he had on (Janey would cringe). Well he came back with a vengeance, while we're all yahooing, he comes back and wipes us all out. All dead. I think I had the black arms and donated them to the museum (FH). I think Homer still has those on display.

I am sure there will be more things I might recall, its been so long. We sure had a lot of fun and some growing pains. Thanks to the WoD staff and players :O)

Bleh, most of the rebels never became Chaos guards themselves (except for Wode--the main author of the infamous writ of defiance, or whatever its name was). I don't remember all of the rebel's names myself but I sure remember who were on the loyalist side. Sir Mego Stone and I (I think I was still Siegfried at the time) were the most outspoken. I think Ehran and Homer also made their distate of the rebellion public. I'm not sure if my friend Drune (Grimm McGee) was still around by then but if he was he surely would have said something. There were others but their names are not coming to mind right now.

You know, what I would like? for someone to retell the story of the Serpent's Hold garrison, and its formation at the Queen's request (first and only town ever in history to receive a founding charter from the Queen herself). Sir Mithril Moorbane of the Order Guards was named the garrison's captain (and mayor of the town too I suppose), and for months the defenders of Serpent's Hold battled the invading pirate forces from Buccaneer's den. Unfortunately, I was not present when the town was first formed, but I do remember when the invasion was officially over. For a while, Serpent's Hold was the hottest hunting spot in the world, visited even more than Buccaneer's den :)

I'm very fuzzy on the details, though. I could ask Mithril himself (if I can manage to find his e-mail address . . .)

I remember the battle against the pirates from Bucs Den. There was another battle on SH island, there was also Sisters.......was that the same battle?
I remember the website we had where we can put our real life pics on there. I remember a couple of them. Yours (Tamra) I remember vividly with yours being the first pic in line of about 10.
The shard was like 4 months old when I came here. I remember most of the stuff Tamra just listed but I believe a few of them were changed before I came on.
Oh......and I remember Ciara when she was a newbie lol
Oh, my first character was Mark Smithy and not Herakles. He has since been renamed and is my do-all laborer.

Oh, I lied......Shade actually made me change the name to my first character and he eventually became Mark Smithy. I refuse to tell anyone what his name was because it was one of those of "DooD" proportions and at my ripe old age I am too embarassed to repeat it. It was the same name I used on OSI.
And remember that dress that Shade wore? I loved it!!!! hehe

I vaugely recall the pirate invasions on Serpent's Hold. I do remember the sisters constantly attacking. I used to go beat up on them... *blush* ok they beat up on me usually.

I believe Mithril (If that's the same Mithril you are speaking of) and Lara are still running shard of the own. It was Sanctuary, and I believe it changed it's name to Comraich or something like that.

It's too bad that we don't have access to all the posts from all the board incarnations.

one of the things i remember from way back when was that monsters couldn't open doors. one day i ran from a dragon and hid in a small room to recoup my strength briefly and lo the damn dragon opens the door and makes himself to home. not a very pleasant surprise that was hehe.
not so long ago the pretorians invaded trinsic with mutant farm animals. i was late to the party and wound up atop the wall fighting a pretorian general who took quite a long time to expire. by then of course the group had moved on but i was struck by the brilliant notion that if i hustled along the wall i would trap the city full of prets and pets between myself and the main band. i was much braver then you see hehe. arriving at the far end of the wall i sallied into the street and managed to draw a red chicken down on myself. not wanting to chase it all about to finish it off i led it into a building and trapped it. whereupon it emoted a huge grin and uncorked a blast of firey breath that would have done a royal dragon proud. it was a long long day from then on.
the time that ciara and i did most of the clearing of skara of giant colourful rats. She popped a gate and went through with me hard on her heels. that was the plan anyhow i got sidetracked by the half dozen exuberantly tough rats that poured through the gate into the bank. by the time i had managed to kill them off the gate was long gone of course. Ciara of course had managed to survive through a certain amount of lively movement. It was touch and go getting linked up with her but once we did we developed some rat busting techniques that actually worked and managed to clear most of skara of the outsize rodents. suddenly gates opened and it rained heroes upon skara and the quest lasted probably less than 10 minutes longer.
the time i was marking runes and stopped in Yew to speak to Malachai Wolfsbane for a minute and we noticed Darkspawn starting patrolling near us. turned out there were a lot of them and some Demons as well. We thought we could deal with it but then had to break down and admit we needed help. There were all of half dozen of us whacking away and generally holding our own when we were joined by a person whose name i ought to remember. This fellow immediately threw himself into the fray and managed to draw down on himself a number of spawn. he managed to stay ahead of them long enough to let us scrape them off as he went by. You would have think this would have dimmed his enthusiasm just a tad but no he zips off and gets another herd. this was his sop during the rest of the battle and it worked not all that badly as we only ressed him a couple times. It was pretty funny as he would come screaming past with literally a herd of spawn hard on his heels.

Wow! This is neat set of remembrances. Tamla- very nice to hear from you after a long time. I have shared most of my old-time memories in various story posts in the writings archive. One gem some of you may not remember, though...
As you recall, the rebellion was based around the upstarts who were to be knighted by the Queen for their service on a quest. Many folks know that Homer opposed both the knighting and the rebellion, but who remembers the names of the knights-who-never-were? I don't know many of them, but I do know one. It might have been cool, actually.

Ahhhhhh I remember Smudge, vaguely. i think he was gone soon after I came on. In fact there was a story on the website but I dont know if its still there. "Smudge on the mountain".
Good to see you still are around Homer. You may not know me since we didnt really get to conversing with each other. But I remember seeing you often. I was aka Mark Smithy.

Smudge is still around, just not healed yet from BD5x2 and suffering from my lack of playing time. "Smudge on the Mountain" was loosely based on my WOD character, and is still in the archives, as are a few of the Smudge "Case Files" I used to introduce the character.
Herakles, are you related to the early Ackadia version? I do remember Mark Smithy, though we did not interact much.

things got pretty testy for a while. i remember almost coming to blows with the D'Allroy bros one night in the Haunt over it. they just couldn't seem to get it through their head that deposing the Queen and "electing" a new ruler was really and truly TREASON.
