Improving 4.0.0c client "lag"

Postby Bayn on Thu Feb 05, 2004 2:01 am

for those that use the 4.0.0c client, there are a couple of things you can do that may improve your experience with it.

I've experienced some client lag, strange discoloration around the edges of the screen at times and so on. I'm using AOS, by the way.

I edited uo.cfg and turned off the translation server, ie:

TranslationServer=off
TranslationServerAutomatic=off

I also thought "what the heck" after reading about OSI's patch to the 4.0.0c client that was supposed to plug a supposed memory leak. I ran uopatch and the patch took just a few seconds.

So far tonight, the client seems faster and "cleaner". The process takes an average of 9,486K memory usage and runs about 10% cpu usage.

I've never noticed any real lag, but with translation off, it does seem better. I reverted to dialup just to test things out, and even at 21.something (does ANY ISP actually give you 56?) it felt a little smoother. Thanks for the tip. ;)

This morning I seem to be experiencing a bit of client lag, unless it is bandwidth lag and I am mistaking it. I did get the discoloration of the screen at the edge I am moving towards a couple times. hmmm.

This is not really concerning lag, but it seemed likely that anyone using a newer client might like this tidbit.

At some point osi stuck in this annoying logo/"Challenge Everything" bit at the startup, if you go into your ultima online/music directory and rename/delete ealogo.bik and osilogo.bik, that will go away.

Bayn, what is the patch you referenced, one specifically downloadbable for the 400c client? Or are you referring to patching up to some specific level against the OSI patch servers?

The patch I mentioned is one that OSI published for the 4.0.0c client. I couldn't find anything downloadable so I reluctantly ran uopatch.exe. Now that I think about it, it could not have patched the 4.0.0c client because I don't have a standard "client.exe" in my UO dir anymore. Must have just patched my copy of AOS and fortunately that didn't prove detrimental, at least. Maybe there is a downloadable patch somewhere on the OSI site, if anyone finds it before me, please let us know.

I'd love to learn how to modify standard clients to work with WoD...still awaiting info from Drocket about that. Then, I'd start going through all the latter releases that support the various versions of uo and see if something really good. The 4.x clients typically do cause client lag for a large segment of users. There is a cpu fix out there supposedly also that is supposed to help but I couldn't find it yesterday. If I have time today, I'll try to work on that stuff more.

I have a few versions of "cpu reduced" clients, and while it is true they use up less cpu power than the regular one does, I found them to be even worse in the lag department.

Send me a PM with an email or ICQ contact or something if you'd like me to pass one or more on to you, I forget where it is I got them from now.

Couple of questions regarding uo.cfg:

What about all of these?

TranslationServerTranslatorName=Systran
TranslationServerSystranNFWMarker=>?>
TranslationServerSystranTopicalGlossaries=S
TranslationServerSystranDocumentType=S
TranslationServerAutomaticTranslation=true
TranslationServerClickTranslation=on

Also, FrameSkipping=off. What is frame skipping?

And, what is this: OrderCacheOnStartup=off

Finally, I used to have my journals auto saved but had to reinstall UO. Can someone give me the steps to set that back up please? Thanks!

If I switch to fullscreen mode, that graying at the edges goes away. It must be something about AOS's shading method (or something equally out of my technical depth) because it never used to happen me with LBR.
