Yea it would be a hassle, but from a developer standpoint it would be easier to make a shard run smooth if the emu under it worked properly hehe. POL hopefully will get with it in the next release. Things need to be fixed and changed. I don't know the behind the scenes stuff but why on earth would you send localized messages(clilocs) to the client in text form when they are already there and just need a command from the server to display it on the screen?
I was just showing two examples of emus that have surpassed POL. I actually wouldn't use RunUO as it can be a resource hog plus the other stuff I don't like about it.

Haven't heard of that one. Sounds interesting.

Then there is RunUO. It supports everything EA/OSI has at the moment and everything in it works properly!

RunUO seems to be quite superior to POL from the what I can tell. My home shard runs much faster with RunUO than POL.

But the community totally stinks (pure opinion) and it uses C# which means it'll only run on windows at the moment(and in the future most likely)not linux. And like true Microsoft mentality RunUO is closed source. You can change anything you want since the only things in the core are stuff like networking and things that don't need to be changed anyway really.

Yeah, the community is like a secret brotherhood or something, but the server itself is great. It IS too bad it will only run on a Windows box but it is very flexible and powerful.

I'd love to see WoD on a RunUO box.

Simon, I was giving you a way to back out of a painfully ignorant comment. There's still time to make an allusion to "Lord British" or some such nonsense if you feel like it.

Even though this is straying a bit off-topic, I have a quick comment about emulators. A switch to another emu is almost totally out of the question: there is just too much invested in POL over the years. Even so, being stuck with POL is really not that bad. It allows us to run the shard with much lower hardware requirements. Also, the POL developers have proven themselves to be committed to maintaining the software, even if they are slow about adding features. POL has been around 5+ years, while the RunUO team is still getting started in my book. People complain about shards coming and going, but emulators are guilt of the same thing. Heck, the RunUO team is made up of people who abandonned an older emu once upon a time.

Anyway, the map issue is certainly holding back POL, but it's not the be-all and end-all of issues. Nothing is stopping us from adding new items, mobs or dungeons...except maybe time and motivation?

I say, old chap, it is quite true, y'all know.

We are just having problems with the cuisine fusion. Biscuits and gravy bloody well conflict with bangers and mash. Drives me barmy at times. but, fried opossum and crisps are finger licking good!

What Laephis says has a lot of merit, I think. POL has been around for YEARS, with an extremely stable development team. RunUO is still the new kid on the block, made up of a development team that mostly comes from other emulators that they dumped when they got bored with them or broke up with after 'issues' with other developers. POL development may be slow, but it is steady. I know which emulator I would bet on to be around 5 years from now.

On top of that, a lot of the current limitations of POL will be removed with the next version. I can't wait :)
