A new website feature

Postby Drocket on Wed Sep 24, 2003 2:29 am

There's a new feature on the website, "server status". There's a link to it in the navigation bar at the top of most (all) pages. It displays the server status (up/down), how long its been since the last restart, the characters online and more.

I also rearranged some of the website pages. If you find any broken links, let me know.

I noticed last night that this also lists the people that are in private. Kinda defeats the purpose of private if you ask me. Any way to fix that?

Actually I dont think it does defeat the purpose of the Privacy button at all. I feel that the private mode was originally intended rather be used to eliminate various people from messaging you ingame when you are busy doing something, or out hunting solo, or just to indicate to people that you want to be left alone, which it still does quite effectivley.

WoD is after all a community and should not become a collection of complete hermits. If someone wants to drop by my place and maybe visit because they see that I am online, I really do not see any problem with that. In fact I really like that I can have a look and see who is actually online, even if they are just sitting there macroing, it really does not mean that their right to privacy has been violated at all. :P

AND I also think that it sorts of defeats the purpose of having the page show how many players are online to a prospective new account or someone coming in from say the UO Top 200 if 5 or 6 of the 20 online players "Don't Exist".

That was my 3gp worth!

BUT I really do think that the page needs a picture or 2 just to spruce it up, and maybe a note by the server uptime that the server restarts every 32 hours:)

I guess those do need some explaination :)

The first number is the percentage of CPU that is being used by POL. Its really not very accurate, though, but it does at least give you a general idea.

The second number is the number of scripts that are waiting to run. That really is the more important number, in terms of how well the server runs. Even if the CPU usage would be relatively high, as long as POL can keep up with the scripts as they try to run, things still run smoothly. If POL starts to fall behind then you wind up with lag as scripts wait to run (you double-click an item and... wait until your number comes up in the queue.)

leave it there, if you wanna be in private mode it's your own choice and reason for doing so. Who really cares so long as you can't be bugged. The point of private mode is so you don't get bugged. I will offer this example as to why it should be of little consequince either way. Say you want to be in private, GREAT!, you turn on the privacy feature and bam no one sees you in the .msg, or .online section. Now that you are in private, you walk into the bank or a dungeon or wherever in the realms you choose to be in private mode. One major problem here is that you are not invisible. Anyone can see you online, having seen you this person having just checked his or her .online, and didn't see your name but a private listing. Now how in the world do you supose you will keep them from wondering why you wanted to be in private mode? The same way you would if you were listed on the forums as being online. Good old WoD trust and understanding. We are not OSI and can understand each others wishes to be left alone should we want to be left that way. That's my 5 bucks worth. I say keep the new addition to the web page.
