Taming+Barding

Postby Bassett on Mon Mar 15, 2004 5:46 pm

I just changed Karl's skillset to taming as prime(110), peacemaking secondary(90, music is 60 but it works fine) and animal lore at 60.
I tend to dazzle great dragon with 2-3 tries, then when i try to tame it: Blabla has angered the yaddayadda.
Happens all the time(first tests, 30mins trying), so is animal lore somehow mandatory to get taming work? And is peacemaking totally useless too? Took me around 10mins to tame a great and i've seen few people do it in less than a minute :(
I'd really love to tame all nice colored ones :)
At the moment it seems a bit hard with tamer/bard.

Lore is needed to tame an animal but not to control it. So you could get a dragon from someone else and control it just fine because of your taming skill.

Sorry, I'm not a GM or Admin, but Tristan is a decent tamer. (well I think so anyway) hehe

Anyway, I have never seen anyone be very successful at taming Greats without Lore as a prime. In theory, it should be possible to tame a Great without Lore, but man is it hard.

As you saw last night when I tamed the White Draggie for you, Lore is the skill that "calms" the beast. Therefore making it easier to tame it.

Now, I have absolutely no clue about the scripting aspect of Lore with Taming. I can only offer my experience on the issue.

Good Luck!

Basically, if the creature is angered, then that attempt at taming fails completely. So if your animal lore is low, then you almost always would anger the beast, so taming would be virtually impossible. This is only on a select group of creatures, of which dragons are one. I'd have to looki up ID's on the rest of the list to see what else it applies to.

If you want to be a truly effective tamer, prime Lore and Taming.

You can still prime peacemaking or .. or...the opposite of peacemaking..hehe, whatever it is called. lol. Instigation, umm, irritation...hmmm...PROVOKE! That's it.
;)

so,

Lore, Taming, Provoke
Magery, Peace, MR

might be good. I dunno, I never barded before.

Hmm what about musicianship then? i have it as prime, can i change lore/music and still provoce effective? I have provoc as prime. My skillset:

Prim: Provoc, Musician, Taming
Second: Lore/ Magery / Invoc

What to change to become a good bard and tamer?

I got the skillset as following on Karl:
1: Tame, mage, lore
2: provo, invo, medi

Don't give a jack about magic res, Anna has 60 as well, mostly dies of failing lich or non-casters like dragons :)
Music is effective at 60 too, I think 100 music is about wasting a primeslot. Secondary is more than good enough from what i've used provocation :)

My bard has music in a secondary slot and it works fine.

primes: Provoke, Magery, Lockpicking (taming would be subbed here for you.

Seconds: Music, Invoc, Magic Res.

He can go almost anywhere, famine and vesper are tough for him, but with a dragon it could be better.

*thinks about replacing lockpicking with taming*

From the manual:

Animal Lore

Animal Lore does have benefits outside of being a druid. The animal lore skill gives you a greater understanding of the creature you are trying to tame. While it does not improve your chances you can tame the creature, it will decrease your chances of angering the creature. The last thing you want to do is anger a dragon you are trying to tame. Long is the list of tamers who have become a piece of toast because they angered a dragon while trying to tame it.

Also:

Taming and Bards
Music has the power to soothe the savage beast

Trying to tame an angered creature takes time to calm the creature and get it to listen. If you are a bard and can pacify the creature with music you can get it to listen to you faster. This can also be effective if your animal lore doesn't prevent you from angering the creature.

Provocation can also be used against the bigger creatures. For example, provoke a dragon defender on a dragon, then tame away. If you anger the dragon, run, heal and try again.

The list of tamable animals and the taming skill level it takes to tame in the manul need to be redone. Here is what the hardest four are listed as:

Frost Drake 99
Dragon 99
Nightmare 119
Great Dragon 119

Now, obviously some thing is wrong with this list because one can not get 119 taming. I beleive that Great dragons are around 98 or 99.

Actually the values listed for dragons are correct. The value listed is for a 50% chance to succeed. Any skill below 20 less will have no chance at all, while 20 above will always succeed. So at 119, you will have no chance below 99, and at 140, you will always succeed. No way to actually get there, but that is what the scripts are evaluating. That means at 100 it is still very difficult to succeed, so with buffs to 110, there is a base chance of around 25% success. Hope this helps you :)
