I used to be. Participated in tournaments and such as a sword and board fighter, and had started learning to use polearms.

Gradually tapered off after getting married.

I miss fighting.

I joined it several yrs ago, but it got to political to fast. We had a lot of fun for a while.

they often own real weapons but they fight with silly toys typically lest someone get smeared into paste by accident. there is a european group that fights with live steel and real armour but it doesn't seem to have caught on over here.

Actually here in Europe we have many groups who fight with real weapons, and who are not live-rpg's fighting with those soft "buffers". In England there's some group of people who live like people lived in Medieval time, I saw a documentary about them few years ago.

The "sword" I used when fighting had a rattan blade and a steel basket around the hand. There are strict rules regarding the features of the protective gear to prevent serious injury. Still hurts, but it's not deadly. I was nearly knocked unconscious in a fight once when an opponent pounded me on the top of my helm - drove me to my knees.

The polearm I used had a rattan shaft with foam thrusting tip on one end and a foam blade on the other.

For practice in street clothes instead of armor, we used weapons constructed of pvc pipe and foam.

SCA activities also included a lot of other things besides fighting, though - I started to learn heraldry and calligraphy, as well as sewing my own period clothing. Others in my group also participated in period dance (the woman who taught me to fight was a very good belly dancer as well).

http://www.sca.org is there main site you can do a group search to see if there is a group near you for all you familiar with the SCA i am going to my first Pennsic this year I am a from the Middle Kingdom and hopefully this year we wont be creamed by the East.

You should get back into it Seon i deal with the politics here as well but i just ignore most of it and have fun the hell with em get out to events meet more people and ya gotta love belly dancers what more reason do you need to go back?

Sword-fighting. I miss sword-fighting. Should have been more specific.

Verbal sparring doesn't count.
