Word Puzzle Contest 2

Postby Drocket on Sat Feb 21, 2004 4:52 am

Ok, since the server is down, I'm going to give you another word puzzle to work on. This contest will run until 11:59 EST, Sunday night, and the winner will recieve a Benson potion.

For this puzzle, you can choose any 4 letters you want, but they all must be consonants (that is, anything that is not a vowel (A, E, I, O and U.) Y will count as a consonant for this contest.) The fifth letter is a generic letter vowel - you can use it for any vowel that you want. Once again, the goal is to rearrange the letters to get as high of score as possible. 5 letter words are worth 4 points, 4 letter words are worth 2 points, and 3 letter words are worth 1 point.

Example:

Sings
Songs
Snags
Snugs

Guns
Sing
Song
Sang
Snag
Sins

Gun
Gin
Gas
Sin

Total: 4 words at 4 points each + 6 words at 2 points each plus 4 words at 1 point each := 32 points

All the rules from last time still apply (All words must be modern English, names and abbreviations are not permitted, dictionary.com will function as the referee in deciding what is a valid word.)

Send your entries to me at drocket@drocket.net with the subject "Word Puzzle Contest 2". Include your list of words (preferably set up similar to the above example.) The person with the highest score wins (In case of a tie, the entry I recieve first will be the winner.) Please include your WoD accountname (so I can find you online to give you your reward, if you win) and the name that you want me to post your entry as on the boards (again, if you win.)

Sometimes when you look up a word on dictionary.com it will have it listed as an acronym.

Oh, well, generally not, I would have to say, simply because you can make pretty much anything into an acronym. There are, I suppose, some extremely common acronyms, to the point that they barely count as acronyms anymore - radar, for example. I suppose that would have to be a case-by-case sort of thing, though...

I'm not sure if I explained this quite right, because I've gotten a couple of entries that missed this, so I'll explain it again:

For this contest, you can pick any 4 consonants that you want (a consonant is anything other that A, E, I, O and U.) Once you pick those 4 letters, you can't change them. The fifth letter, though, is essentially a wild card - it can be any vowel that you want it to be. You can use it as an A in one word, then an I in the next, then a U in something else.

The vowels can be resused in multiple words as long as the consonants stay the same. Take the following list as an exmple. The consonants I used are "msst" and I used a singe vowel wherever it would form a word in combination with those four consonants (or a subset of those four):

masts
mists
stems

mass
mess
miss
moss
muss
mast
mist
most
must
mats
mots
smut
stem
toms
toss

mat
met
mut
sat
set
sit
sot
tom

The vowels can be reused in multiple words. The consonants stay the same (msst).

P.S. -- No, that isn't the list I am submitting ;)

No, you can only use the vowel (or any of the letters you picked) once.

An amazing 196 points. Second place goes to Trakas Soulfire, who chose the same letters, but missed some words that Augur managed to find (when words like prost go flying around, that's easy to do. :P) Third place is Wings, who chose the letters "STNG"

That's Ok Drocket. If you do another one, I will (at most) do it as an exercise and refrain from submitting my results. ;)
