and the "I might try it crowd".
Was just browsing trough my Mandrake newsletter and came across this article about a Windows/Linux install comparrison. The installs were done by a non computer geek.

Mandrake 10 is even better. At the last local linux user group meeting I attended ( http://www.nanlug.org ) I got to see how great Mandrake 10 is. Everything worked and just started up. It even found all the windows pcs on the local network automatically. Also you can read AND write to a NTFS drive now with Mandrake 10.

My local linux group has the powerpack edition so it has some commercial software and extra goodies in it. Also with the new package manager you can update the OS and install/remove programs just as easy as windows now.

It's pretty safe to say that I am a huge fan of Mandrake Linux v10. I have finally found the OS that will replace windows on my pc.

hehe :P

Yea, I like the apt-get package manager that debian has. I'm glad the other distro's have made their own style of apt-get. It makes installing things a lot easier. Their all good for replacing windows.

HEHE I prefer Mandrake for it's ultra ease of setup.
But there all good.
And was glad to hear that the open source community is alredy planning there stratagy to make Linux compatable with the next release of Windows (not due for a year or two).
Now if more hardware vendors would start writing drivers for Linux then all would be good. :)
Can't put any distro on the box I'm using now. All sound drivers i have found don't work right and the video drivers are still under development. :(
If I had the money both could/would be fixed by buying a sound card and a new vid card. Rather than using the on-board sound/vid.

Oh and the main board I'm using is the Asus A7V8X-MX with 512MB mem (64 shared with vid), on board audio (Soundmax Integrated), On board vid by VIA/S3 KM400 Unichrome Integrated, and onboard nic (via). Linux already handels the nic just fine. If anyone cares to go look for drivers and let me know where to find them. I would be most grateful.
I did find a semi usable (looks like) vid driver on Sourceforge. Still reding docs on what needs to be done to make it work.

I found a few links for ya.

For video I found http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=296#km400 If your using 9.2 then the 9.1 driver should work. I doubt there's that much difference between 9.1 and 9.2 Mandrake.

For audio the one you may need is second from the top http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download ... lName=P4PE

Hopefully those work but if they don't then you can just try picking Vesa as your vid card and ac97 for the sound . Those two seem to be generic drivers for vid and sound.

Good luck :)
