Is it better to repair your items early and often or wait till they are low durability? What makes them last longer? Or is it the same either way?

As far as i can remember, each time an item takes damage it is made less effective until it is repaired, but with each can only be repaired a limited number of times till destroyed, so you end up making a decision, do you want an item that will be close to 100% but it will last a shortish amount of time, or are you willing to use an item while it is less effective but has a longer overall lifespan.
