Ugh . . . Benson potions

Postby Joram Lionheart on Fri May 14, 2004 4:02 pm

[Warning: Rant ahead . . .]

Just finished using ten magical essence potions. Took me a few months to gather enough magical junk to obtain 1000pts but I finally did it. I figured the more potions I had the better the chances would be of getting something nice. Boy, was I wrong?

Of course, I wasn't expecting to get a item of destruction right away (though I was hopeful), but I did expect to get a few relatively decent items, good enough to be sold or given away to friends. I thought perhaps a few bows of maiming, maybe a couple of power, with any luck, one of destruction. If anything a good bow of maiming and archery, or silver and maiming would have been good enough to keep. I got nothing of the sort, NOT EVEN CLOSE. All I got was more bensons, and of the WORST kind *sighs*

- FIVE FINE bows of QUALITY
- 1 DURABLE bow of QUALITY
- 2 DURABLE bows of MIGHT
- 1 FINE bow of MIGHT
- 1 indestructible bow of MIGHT and archery

[a few of them had "of weakness" suffix, but ONLY that suffix]

Not a single silver, nothing better than might. Notice that SIX (out of ten) of those bows are of the lowest quality (fine), THREE are of the second lowest quality (durable), and only one is indestructible.
Now, that last bow could have been SOOOOOOO much nicer if the damage modifier would not have been so low.

I'm utterly dumbfounded: why do benson potions give such crappy magic items when they're supposed to be the best way to get good magic items? If I wanted to get a pile of bows of quality and might I wouldn't need to hoard magic junk for months and waste 100k on potions, I can just go to the nearest graveyard and hunt there for a few days.

I understand that a few of those were bound to be below durable and might but NINE OF THEM??? And the tenth one was only better because of the prefix!

I think this is WAYYYY past just random bad luck. Is there something I'm missing here?

While I didn't do ten potions at a time, I can tell you that I have had similar bad luck with Benson. I have heard from others the same complaint. I just used one last evening, in fact, and got a fine platemail legs of defense and camping. I am happy about the camping bonus, but not about the "defense" part. I need to decide if it's worth a slightly lower a/r for the camping bonus.

The very first Benson potion I used on a lich staff created a silver lich staff of power. I cannot recall another item that just grabs me. I find much better magics than Benson gives.

While I do agree that it is a great way to get rid of the magics that are unneeded and unwanted, I have thought for a long time that something isn't right in his "programming."

perhaps if Drocket pruned back his "scottish" genes the oils would be more generous

Perhaps, we should fire Benson and in his place put a lady. Then for sure we would be better compensated for our efforts.

That is truly some bad luck. However, keep faith in Benson. I've used many potions over my time, and one of my items was definitely a keeper IMO. It was Tempered studded arms of camping and protection. Something like that. However, I do get a lot of bad items.

I think the main point of Benson, anyway, is just a gold sink. So, it would seem your 10 potions served that purpose :(. I did something smiliar last week (bought 4 potions) and they all turned out to be 'bad' items. I'm just hopeful that next time I'll have some better luck. Hopefully, you will too.

Benson should sleep with the fish.

Perhaps down the road when we can add them new maps, we can come up with a better system for dealing with magics.

I heard that Mr Benson was adjusted at one point because his potions gave away too many good items. I've never received a totally excellent (uber) item although I did get two very nice ones, temp plate of mr and plain plate legs of invul. That is out of maybe 40 potions though. The last 20 I did yielded only items of quality or defense.

*shrug* Makes ya wonder why we bother except that it IS a good way to get rid of the thousands of reasonably useless magic items that are routinely generated. Otherwise people'd hoard them for some unknown reason and there'd be a lot more blackhole complaints.

I think I would have been better off selling the potions (which tend to go for a lot more than 10k). After all, Sebastena is guranteed to give you what you want so long as you have enough money saved up.

Benson seems to be a good gold sink. He's what every shard needs. Takes a ton of gold out of the shard and gives very little in return.

*feels cheated*

I propose a new feature for WoD--the civil suit! The ability to sue NPCs for a number of different offenses, including false advertisement and SCAMMING people out of their money!

Dont you all see? It's all part of benson's plan to get himself filthy rich while making us all poor. We give him 10-20 "bensons" + 10k and he gives us back ONE benson.

Yes, let's turn WoD into America. Then we can go hunt other shards that we might believe have "Magic items of Mass Destruction."

(for those prone to flaming, that WAS a joke. ;) )

Joram,

Benson didn't falsely advertise. That a player does not get what they want is a fact of life - to ask too much of him is merely setting [your] expectations too high. Just because you didn't get good items this time is no reason to complain. I am certain that you have got items previously that are good, and will certainly do so in the future. Granted, I can understand how after all that effort, very little was given back to you in the end, but I'd like to think that it wasn't an issue to complain about.

Reading your post, Joram, I'm not entirely sure what you're wanting, besides complaining. I don't see any suggestions to rectify the situtaion or if even there really is a need to. All I see is a "but Mum, I didn't want this! I wanted a 'mega indestructable titan's plate vest of money laundering and ninja steath +50'!"

But I'd like to think after the long talks we had, I'd know you better and to say that your post was just a way to vent - which is fair enough. I just felt obligated (as usual) to speak up about it.
