Young and Dead Tags

Postby simon on Sat Apr 03, 2004 5:56 pm

I brought this up once before, but could the young and dead tags be added to the server status of the site as well?

Ok, I may have added this. There's no one online right now that's dead or young, though, so I can't test it.

Any chance on making these indicators options on a .options screen?

Some people might not want their "young" or "dead" tags to be shown. The options should, of course, be reflected consistently in-game and on the Server Status page.

Additionally, the Private tag we see when we do an .online command in-game should carry over to the Server Status page which it does not do currently.

Not to be argumentative, but...

I'm pretty sure that the .private idea was brought up before, and the decision was made that it doesn't carry over to the "Server Status." I think the reasoning was that knowing someone is on doesn't mean you can contact them.

As for the "young" and "dead" tags: I had an incident in game the other night where someone died but I missed it because of fighting. I did a .online (checking to see if Nia was on) and saw that someone was dead. After messaging them I was able to help them out.

Personally, I don't like the idea of not being able to see those statuses (or is it stati?). Also, before I get on, I usually check to see who is on (whether in private or not).

Bayn, what's your reasoning for wanting to make someone completely invisible while they are in-game?

If an individual wants to be completely invisible, except to admins, then why not let them?

It is certainly none of my business if Player X doesn't want someone to know they are online, if they are dead, or if they are young. I see absolutely no benefit to the enforced tags.

If someone is 'young', you notice it right away when you see their name. What reasons are there to announce it on the .online list?

There are no benefits to flagging a player as dead. If someone is 'dead' and they need assistance, they can call for help quite easily.

These little 'helpful' flags may not be considered helpful by some. Rather, they could be considered an invasion of privacy.

I guess I can't argue with your reasoning, Bayn, except to say that when I'm in game (usually), I want to be surrounded by my friends. If I want to be alone, I don't log in. I find other things to do, like read or write. But that's me.

I tend to side with Atei here, this is a MMORPG the idea is to play with others and make new friends. If you want to be left alone don't log in. But then again just using .private to be left alone should work just fine.

If you don't want to be bothered by anyone, going .private seems like the rational option for you. If you don't want people to know you're online (whatever your reason may be . . .), I think .private should allow you to do that. I don't really see how having [young] or [dead] tags next to you constitute an invasion of privacy, though, since it really isn't something you can hide in the first place. If you're dead, the whole world will find out about it the second your screen goes black&white. If you're [young], you have a big flaming sign over your head that says so. Neither instance seems to be something people would "invade" your privacy to find out about it.
Still, if you want to feel like you can "hide" these things (though in practice you really can't), I think .private should allow you to do that (if it doesn't already).

I quite agree! But, some may not and why force them?

Actually, the idea is to have fun, period. Having others real entities adds a lot of enjoyment, in my opinion, but playing with others and making new friends is optional.
