April Contest: Shadowpack Invasion

I'd like to announce a special contest for the month of April: Yew has been invaded by a rather large number of wolves. Not just normal wolves, either - these wolves are quite strong and very fast. If that's not enough, they also hunt in packs.

Because of the danger that they pose to travelers, the queen's head guard for the area, Lt. John Malark, is offering a reward to any who help him. If you kill a wolf and return the hide to him, he will pay you for it. Usually that means gold, but occasionally he may find a magic weapon or piece of armor laying around...

If that weren't enough, though, he's also holding a raffle for a special prize - a painting deed. Every hide that you turn in to Lt. Malark is worth 1 point. At the end of the contest (which will roughly be April 26th or so), a winner will randomly be chosen.

And if THAT weren't enough, everyone who participates will recieve an additional special booby prize that I'm not going to reveal. One caveat that I'm going to put here, though, is that you have to participate 'sufficiently'. What is sufficiently? I don't really know. I just know that when I did the Christmas contest, a number of people just turned in 1 present simply so they'd qualify, which seemed a bit underwhelming. I'd prefer people actually participate instead of just offing one wolf simply so they can get the prize...

Anyway, hope everyone has fun with this, and be careful

amen to that be careful comment. these things are actually dangerous and you need to be careful hunting them. running around simply attracts dozens and i make no joke about this of them. i when first fighting them got cut off and made a bolt for freedom. wound up with nearly 30 of them chasing me and when i got hung up it was over in scant few seconds. i would strongly suggest that you place anything you cannot afford to loose in the bank before hunting these things.

I think there should be an extra chance of getting a non gold item for bringing back shadowpack leader heads to the Lt.

It's hides, not heads, and the leaders have two hides. So you get two chances with them.

Turn in 31, got some gold and a benson. But you're not supposed to be getting great rewards for it - its a quest/contest. Whatever the grand prize is should be nice.

I think EVERYONE is missing the point here... Yew has been invaded! We all need to get out there and remove this menace, and NOT because of "what we'll GET for doing it", but because it's our DUTY. Adding the contest/quest thing to it is very nice, indeed, but it IS a "quest", so the reward IS the quest. I dunno about the rest of you, but in the past, on previous places I've played, when I heard some shard-wide announcement that some new threat had popped up, and knew a quest was starting, I just ran into the fray, knowing I was going to enjoy the havoc, not worrying about what my "prize" was going to be... THAT's really my idea of what quests are... a group of people playing the game and having a GREAT time doing it. Not people pushing and shoving to "grab" as much loot as they can so they can say at the end "Look at what I got!" or "I collected the most (insert your collectable here)! Where's my reward?!" The fun and reward is in the adventure. Long is the list of GM's who have had quests turn into Monty Hall campaigns because too many people overlooked the overall point of the adventure. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Thank you Celeste for that post, maybe it'll turn some people's thinking around. That's the way quests used to be back when I was a wee-one, people actually enjoying them for the sake of enjoying them. But as of late, it seems to be more about the loot more than anything. Now I'm not saying everybody cares more about loot than quests, but a greater percentage does at least.

Well stated, Celeste. :D

Also, the Shadowpack doggies are ALL OVER Yew. We found some by the Brigand Camp south of Yew, they were near the Crypts, Benson, the Moongate--everywhere. No place is safe.

Go slowly, travel in packs yourselves ( ) and help clear this menace from Yew.

I have been killing all the wolves I can take. I have turned in well over 100 hides so far. Maybe even 200 or more(lost count, happens alot to me). This invasion has me hunting the wolves more than my normal Vampires  . I love the turn in ratio. Im getting gold, magics, decorations. Some magics are good. I have gotten fine magery. Some magics are horrible. Fine Defense. But what matters the most is the killing of the wolves to protect our lands.

Beware those leaders! Ouch a leader and a regular wolf can kill a fully buffed great and a master archer.
