Troll troubles and Morigan

Postby Bayn on Fri Sep 05, 2003 2:44 pm

I just wanted to thank Morigan for the assists this morning. For the first time, I had wandered far north to where the trolls live in great numbers and was happily slaying them but there were a lot of them and not being able to slip through their ranks as I was able to in the past made things chancy at times.

Morigan arrived with the cream colored Great that handily made mincemeat out of many of them. We found a place we couldn't pass on foot and Morigan was able to teleport over but I was out of regeants for that particular spell. Alas, alackaday. *sob*

Still, now that I know that area a bit more, I shall visit it more often now!

ooc:

I can't deal well with Titans or Ogre Lords. I saw a Troll Lord behind a bunch of trees I couldn't get past but couldn't reach it to check it out. I wonder how tough they are.

Ogre Lords are dangerous but I can wear them down by dancin' around them with my horsie, timing things to whack 'em. Of course, timing is never perfect and I invariably go through 2 or 3 greater heals and several bandages. But Titans...geez.

If I didn't have 100 magic resistance I imagine one magical blast by a titan would crisp me. One hit takes me down nearly 50% usually every time.

I even have a bit of trouble with gargoyles at times. Evil spell casters seem way too overpowered..either that or I am just not resisting the way I should with MR as a primary.
As a primary, MR should really make a difference.

Does invocation have anything to do with magic resistance? I have 0 invocation but that would be normal for a warrior, right? I figured invocation was the mage's 'anatomy' equivalent.

Ah well, I have pretty much resigned myself to dealing with the more underpowered nasties. Either I am not doing something right or the warrior/magic balance is skewed way in favor of magic.

Bryan
Magic resis at 100 is good but you will only
at best save 50percent if you resis the spell.
So if he hits you with 100pt hit you resis you
only take 50 pts. Invo is to mages like tactics
are for mage, give you greater hitting power.
Titians are very strong magicaly, there invo is
matched with your magical resis which is stronger
get the nod. (guess who gets it mostly) :D
Hope that helps you figger it out but its not
always right 100 percent. Once a Titians out of
magical spells he is a wuss really.
Good Luck :)

Thanks Adonis, I think the root of my problem is that I am just a real scaredy cat. :) I'll steel myself to absorb the Titan's magical blasts until he uses himself up and then move in for the kill.

Actually, I have done that with Reapers before but it is easier with them, they just stand there. :)

Hail
If you do that dont give him time to recharge
or you in for a long long time of flams on your back
side.
Many are scared of the titians so dont feel bad at
all. I am working my warrior up to fight them
it can be done so keep hanging in there.

Ok, I was going to go to bed but I'll give it one try before. You have inspired me. I'll let you know...shouldn't take long to find one....

I wish I could cast Reflection though. :)

Oh, I CAN cast reflection, how nice.

Anyway, found one..didn't have cure potions with me. *sob*
Went through all my heal potions (8) and a bunch of bandages. Blasted guy kept poisoning me! They have a lot of mana too.
I ended up leaving, finding more GH and cure potions and going back. He was still low on mana although his health was all up. THIS time, he went down. Whew. I think my heart rate is almost back to normal now. lol.

Thanks for the encouragement, Adonis.

I'd still rather take on mobs of trolls, ettins, ogres and other non-magical critters but at least I don't "fear" those Titans as much anymore. ;)

you might want to consider carrying some wands to smite him with. daemon wands are kinda nice. just pop the daemon out handy to him and scream "sic'em". you will also find blade spirit scrolls handy if you can swing casting it at 60. titans hate blade spirits and if you keep a steady stream of them popping out at him he will happily blow off his entire store of mana on the spirits leaving him fairly easy meat at that point. yet another option are the ever popular hellfire wands which you can buy behind the bank. once you start pounding him with those he starts worrying about healing himself more and frying you less.
fyi 100 MR makes a pretty huge difference. i have 86 and i live in fear of major league casters most of the time.

Those are good ideas! I shall make use of them.Well, so much for Titans for today thogh...was out with Julumax (I think that was his name?) and he was going to show me something but he never said a word. Strange. Anyway, we got separated and I ran into lots of monsters and killed ' em all and was feeling full of myself and found a titan. Hehehe.

Got him down to just a fraction of health but I was down also and he nailed me first. I did manage to recover everything but that very expensive tempered mace of destruction and macefighting. He took it and after I FINALLY found a healer and got back I couldn't find him....and it I could, I suppose I could have smacked him with my shield or something. lol.

*sob*

ahh well, very expensive death taxes this time...skills AND my weapon.

You've already received a bunch of good advice, but figued I'd throw in my 2 cents.

Not sure precisly what tatics you use against casters, but something that tends to work rather will is to stand back and snipe at them with a bow of whatever sort you fancy untill they are out/low on mana and charge you, even 60-70 archery is fine for this.

Trying to melee a titan while it's still casting flamestrikes and whatnot at you isn't all that fun :(.

Oh and assuming it isn't cruel brutal poison, I generally ignore it till the end of battle, or if I must cure try a cure poison spell. Stinks drinking a greater cure and then discovering you need to heal quick.

I need all the advice I can get! :)

Not sure precisly what tatics you use against casters,

I have two methods:

1)I charge 'em and swing my mace wildly.

2)I keep my distance and try to stay alive as they mana dump on me, THEN I charge in and swing my mace wildly.

Neither method is highly effective but sometimes one or the other works.

stand back and snipe at them with a bow of whatever sort you fancy untill they are out/low on mana and charge you, even 60-70 archery is fine for this.

Hmmm, archery. NEver thougt o' that.

What about deadly poison? I THINK that is what Julumax was going to talk about since he was an assassin but we never got to that point. He went one way and I couldn't find him and then I got distracted by monsters and then I got dead. *sigh*

No, it is not. It's worse than poking a sharp stick in the eye!

I like those ideas quite well also. I am considering dropping anatomy from a secondary and promoting magery to a secondary. That would allow me to do blade spirits, other spells and possibly polymorph which is quite useful. My mana would still be extraordinarily limited but I'm a warrior more than a mage type anyway.

Trolls

Postby Homer on Sun Sep 07, 2003 2:48 am

NO. You do not want to hunt trolls. They smell bad and they have lyme disease ticks. Nasty, nasty. They may seem fun to hunt at first, but that is just a trick. Leave them alone. Titans, that's what YOUR talkin' 'bout. Yeah, hunt titans. Leave the trolls...

...for me.
