LAN connection

Postby Thomas Duklain on Thu Jun 12, 2003 5:33 am

I got this POL thing, and thought that just for fun and some scripting education I'd make me a server, only problem is I can't sign on.............

I figure the problem has to do with my router, which hides my IP adress. I have noticed, that others can't connect to the IP adress I have through the router. To play a game via tcp/ip connections, or what have you.

My question is:

Is there a way to set up POL so that I can connect to myself? heh..
I'm using a cable modem on two computers connected through a router.
I really don't know what information would help answer my question, so.. let me know

Well, this is complicated... as you might have suspected.

You can login from the same machine that you have POL running on. To do this, you need to run POL in a separate DOS window and then run the UO client on the same machine -- assuming you make these changes before you start POL (hehe):

You need to setup a server setting in the \pol\config\servers.cfg file that reads:

Code: Select all
{
   Name      Local server
   IP      127.0.0.1
   Port      2593
}

Then you have to change the login.cfg file (make a backup first!) to use that IP address -- and make sure the port address matches the port address specified in your \pol\pol.cfg file (usually ,2593 if you use the default setting that comes with the WoD setup files). Alternatively you can make a copy of the login.cfg file with that IP address and a backup of your existing login.cfg file and interchange them as needed. There are also third-party programs you can use to manage switching out the login.cfg file.

If you want to access your POL server from another machine on the network you have setup via the router, then you need to access the router to determine the IP address it is using (the instructions for doing this should have come with your router). Then you can set the IP address in the login.cfg file on that networked machine to match that of the router... and it should work (I haven't tested that part of it so no guarrantees).

Hope that helps!

If you want to access the POL server from a machine outside your network, you'll need to monkey with settings on your router to forward incoming requests from outside the network to the proper machine inside.

I would think port forwarding would be the easiest way to do this. Find out what ports POL communicates over, and configure the router to forward all requests on those ports to whichever internal IP address the POL server is running on.

The method for doing this depends on the router you are using. Most consumer routers have a web-based admin you can log into to make these changes.

If you happen to be using a Linksys cable/dsl router, I'd be glad to help you with this.

I am using the Linksys cable/dsl router. :)

And, I'm trying to do what you said in the first post now.

Thank you for your help so far, hope it works. I admit I know absolutely nothing about how to do all this. I just wanted to get in and get my hands dirty with it.

for a linksys go get there newest softwear for your router
the hit 192.168.1.1 what you need to do ontop of setting pol server to use 127.0.0.1
is set you router to forward all requests for the port your srever is on to your comp .
if you login to your router you go to advanced setup the hit the forwarding tad and set it it kinda easy just add your ip number in
