Learning the ropes can be knotty ( Wyspr)

Postby Bayn on Wed Aug 27, 2003 2:27 pm

Hail and well met, this is Wyspr. I had thought deeply about utilizing my beautiful dragon Whine on the basis of what I had learned the day before and what others had told me.

I went to the stables and retrieved him from the stablemistress. He was happy to see me and wriggled in joy (and hunger) so I patted him, told him how strong he looked and how wonderfully his eyes whirled and fed him a couple slabs of meat. He belched and smiled toothily. The stablemistress rolled her eyes and hefted her pitchfork meaningfully so we headed outside.

We exited the city and headed north. I asked him to check the area before using his flame breath and he agreed. On the way north through the thick forests we encountered a few minor creatures bent on doing me harm and Whine handily took care of them. However, each time, one of his fire bolts would zero in on me, no matter WHERE I was standing. Once he didn't even use his fire breath until AFTER the battle and then casually lobbed a flaming sphere at me. OUCH!

I thought deeply about this again. Next time we encountered something bad, I told him to stop whatever he was doing and attack! Whine liked this approach. He was able to react independently to danger and use his fire breath and not once did he send a hot one my way.

The hunting was sparse in the hunting grounds north of Britain and west of Minoc but we did take out a few harpies, ents, reapers and gazers. No titans, ettins, ogres or anything. THEN, we spotted an Ogre Lord. Yes, just the test I had been looking for.

We retreated until the OL was out of sight while I blessed and protected my beloved Whine. Then, we advanced and when the angry red Ogre Lord was in sight, I told Whine to STOP and ATTACK! It worked beautifully. He charged in and started chomping and flaming the OL.

My eyes widened with horror as I saw the amount of damage Whine was taking. I couldn't keep him healed fast enough although I spent every bit of magical energy I possessed and all my greater heal scrolls. Perhaps I should have started healing at the very start of the battle, I do not know. Perhaps Whine was just not capable of fighting a creature filled with such powerful evil and strength.

He was doing some damage to the OL but the OL was punishing Whine way too much. I yelled at Whine to cut it out and just follow me the heck outta there but as he turned, the vicious Ogre Lord landed a fatal, last blow to my friends spine. *CRUNCH* Whine collapsed in a red/purple heap.

I sobbed as I rode away and struggled to recover my demeanor enough to cast a Gate spell for return to Britain. Poor Whine, lost to my ignorance of his relative power. Next dragonfriend I get won't suffer this, I vowed.

Now I will return to my home in Yew and regard the light dancing over the waves as they roll into shore, the susurration of the water filling my mind, trying to wash away the death of my friend.

oh damn (can I say that here?), I forgot you can do that. What a marvelous ability to be able to resurrect a dead pet. *mutters more curse words at his forgetfulness and newbieness*

So, can you res anything dead? Let's say I go up there and kill that Ogre Lord. Can I res-kill him until I get tired?

To the best of my knowedge pets (and henchmen) can be res'd a number of times equal to taming (leadership for henchmen) divided by 10 times.

you can only res pets and henchies. MOBs must stay dead (otherwise I'd be a rich rich man :D)

I didn't think they'd res with items...but I just wanted to res-kill that OL out of spite. Make myself feel better.
*sniff*...poor ole Whine, he died for me and didn't even res him...*sob*... I need a dragon statue to put on my fireplace mantle to remember him by...someday..*sniff sniff* I'll get one.

*sniff*..I..I bought one...bwaaaahh...poor Whine. Do..do you think the Ogre Lord actually ate him? That'd be awfully gruesome to contemplate. *sniff* Just forget I asked, 'k?

But if he did, I HOPE HE GOT HORRIBLE INDIGESTION AND DIED AN AWFUL DEATH!

*snif*

One of these days I need to go out and prove to myself what a master tamer is all about and tame one myself! I have a few polar bears and snow leapord deeds banked so now I should make use of the lovely Lyl Green's gift of taming/lore and just do it!

you cannot res a dead monster, however, you CAN make a zombie out of it, IF you have the necromancy skill (which a druid/tamer would not have as necro negates animal lore skill)

Its kind of disconcerting to think of Whine's fate. Lets go hunting sometime and I can show you the ropes, I wouldn't want this to happen again with another friendly dragon. Especially since they should be able to take a squishy, little Ogre Lord.

They should, hmm? Well, I was certainly doing something wrong then. I would love to hunt with you sometime and learn.

I did take Whyne, my new one that I tamed on a guard quest with Nox, to the Cove fort last night for a bit and she did well. However, when she was battling an Ophid mage and avenger at the same time, it was all I could do to keep her healed enough. I had her buffed pretty well too.
