Ok I dont have a mage working just yet, so my thinking maybe wrong on this but. Why cant you cast things like Energy Field and Poison Field but instead of casting them directly at the front line of monsters cast it in the middle of them? That way the headbutters can kick the crap out of the ones infront of it and finish off the ones that actually make it through!

The only problem I see with field spells is though, you get those monsters like Dragons, darkspawn and like the other night on that quest Skeleton Guards, those stupid things ran a game of ring around the rosies with the whole group, strait through the tanks into the mages, back to the tanks..half of us were chasing them through the party back and forth over half a dozen times, cant field spell those ones, thus summons and energy bolts would be best, maybe change your tactics a little, use less field spells and more direct attacks, still be very helpful in a fight.

And I cant find the person that said they wouldnt take their tank up against a mage to quote them, but I know I read it someplace. If I didnt lag as badly as I do (and those that have went out with me hunting know I lag terribly) I would fight any mage player in the pitts. I tried against Aislin, did good but again the lag so it didnt turn out too well. I think some poeple play tanks a little bit to much like a tank in real life, forgetting any sort of tactics at all and just standing in the poison field slashing with their sword. I try not to jump in the fire unless either I know I can win, or im feeling a little crazy

Well thats just my view on the whole mess, later.

Easy solution: Cast "Paralyze" on them, not fields. Bright blue scroll, can't miss it.

The reason I can't cast it in the middle of the group is, by the time I see the group of monsters, all the fighters ARE directly in the middle...

Instead of taking it a step at a time, and possibly taking a few mosters out who aren't paying attention, most fighters run up "wearing pink pajamas screaming 'come get me'"...

Walls are also very useful even if the enemy is, "running circles around you." Monsters don't usually try to avoid walls, or fields... However we have the ability to do so. We can duck around and avoid these fields and make the monster/s continue killing themselves by walking back and forth through them....

I can take on about 2 or 3 titans in the Yew forest using this method alone with an Energy Field and Frost Field.

Assuming your buffed int is up around 170+ try this combo out on your next titan
magic missle - to take down his reflect
feeblemind
curse
mana vamp till he's out - should take 2-3
the direct damage spell of your choise till it's dead (I like lightning but anything will work)

Vamp him, really? I thought his will was too strong. Did that change?

Buffed I am usually between 140-150 intel.

And mages canNOT let a titan beat on them. When they run out of mana they will come beat on you. Ya gotta do the run/cast til they drop. This is one time paralyze scroll comes in handy.

You will get lower numbers with 140-150 int, Edison generally has 170-180 and after debuffing them with curse and feeble ususally vamps for around 60 points, so 2-3 will completly drain them.

As to letting them beat on him while he kills them, thats generally not a problem, his auto heal settings (cast at 75% drink at 50%) keep him up for the most part, the odd time I might need to run a few squares and heal but thats generally infrequent.

As far as wands, how's about this little change. Their spells are cast at 100 Magery and 70 Invocation + half of the user's Invocation skill. This means that (since the whole shard uses magery at 60 anyhow), the warrior types would have the wands the way they are now, and mages would get a little bonus.

The wand's effective Invocation for a typical master wizard would be 120 and for those uber mages (110 skill on their own), the wands would have an effective Invocation of 125. It's not much, but there's no other way to cast a spell with 125 invocation on the shard, so it might be pretty popular as an alternative to the ubiquitous scroll-caster mages.

Along with that, scroll casting should probably be balanced in some way vs. book casting. If you cast from a scroll, you have an effective 20% bonus to the initial magery check (or something like that). How's about we add an element of randomness to scroll casting so that your effective skill when using a scroll varies from 80% of your actual magery/invocation up to 100%. Something like this...

Assumptions:
warrior has an effective magery and invocation of 60, mage has 100 in both.

Warrior uses a recall scroll to get home - no change, spell works just about all the time because the skill check is only 34. Mage, same thing.

Warrior uses scroll to cast Greater Heal on a henchman. The spell works because the check is still only 35, but the damage healed becomes a bit more random. His effective magery for calculating damage healed might be as low as 48 or as high as 60. He could heal as little as 3d6+12 or as much as 3d6+15, okay not much difference.

Mage uses scroll to cast ManaVampire on a Titan. It succeeds pretty readily because his skill is plenty higher than the 80 required. The problem is that, since she used a scroll and had some bad luck, her effective magery/invocation for this spell happens to be just 80 instead of 100. The titan resists her as if she were a mere mageling and continues to bash her with lightning and hammer blows.

How's that for a magery change, eh?

Magery invoc med
resist necro lockpicking

gives stats something like 73 44 108, wears 3 +5 int jewlery, after buffing winds up in the vicinity of 130 100 175-180 sometimes a bit better

There is no cleaning up the computer, my computer is well above and beyond the requirements to handle this little game and I keep it squeeky clean otherwise. Its the fact im behind a router and 50' away from the router on top of that! You talk to Aislin, I did good for what I could but once you start moving to Meditate thats the end of it because the lag causes you to disappear and reappear faster than I can move to where you are! I lag constantly due to crappy ISP here. Im not using this as an excuse its just he blatant truth. As for your challenge. If I could get a good connection I would take you on anyday, anytime, win or lose!

Eldric-
Must be the jewelry, I prefer STRENGTH hehe (mages are weak enough as it is)

Azalin-
Wow and here I am in the boonies on 16,800 dialup. My lag/freezing problem was due to AD junk: Search Assistant (file msbb.exe) and Optimizer (optimize.exe). Cleaned it up and I'm good to go.

Yes I think the Jhelom pits would be fun. Forseti and I used to goof off at the bank like that (way back when it wasn't a problem), but now it would be the Jhelom pits.

Tamila

Thank you for letting me know how you cleaned it up, but im afraid those sort of things I dont have. See I run Ad-Aware weekly, among other programs that make sure to keep my computer free of that crap. I also dump my temp folders and history weekly as well. Im very picky when it comes to my computer and I have taken great time to learn about how to get it to work properly and stay working properly. I have no spyware, adware, virii, trojans, and when im playing Ultima the only other thing that has access to the net is Norton Anti-Virus and it only checks for updates once a week so I know its not the cause! The cause is Adelphia, their crappy service may as well be dial up because besides the fact im connected all the time, I lag to the point of lunacy on alot of programs, especially Ultima, heck most poeple have to run to where were going and summon me because I cant keep up with them when their running. I know its not just me, Sevin lags and gets disconnected just as much as I do, were both in the same house, it happens when one of us is playing and both and his computer is even newer than mine is! We've had this ongoing problem with this company about this connection issue for over 2 years now, and granted I should switch to DSL but since its not my house and I dont pay the bills I cant choose that! Heck honestly the connection now is better than it was about 6 months ago, which is rather pathetic if you ask me, but theres nothing I can do about it!

"With evil all around me -- I can be nothing but evil"

With your evil mind, dark cunning and lack of moral ethics,(i.e. streaking at Aislin's party screaming "Look at my pale, skinny butt!"), and my sharp wit and caustic tongue, (as Shadowstone so politely puts it) we should be able to wipe out all the goodie mages.

You turn 'em into chickens, I'll stab 'em and pluck 'em and we'll invite all the stupid headbutting tanks to a Bar-B-Q!
