DOS Gaming

So I'm looking around my closet at all the old games I haven't played in ages. The Nostalgia Bug must have bit me because the next thing I'm doing is setting up one of the countless scrap PCs that we have at work as a DOS machine. Check out these specs:
  • Pentium 120
  • 32MB Ram
  • 8GB hard drive
  • ISA Soundblaster 16
  • Roland SCC-1 Midi card (this thing was the shiznit!)
1995 eat your heart out! The crazy thing is that I'm worrying about whether this PC is still too fast.
 I guess there is always moslo if I need it.

Anyway, back to the games. Here is what I've got lined up:
  • Ultima 1-8
  • System Shock 1
  • The Elder Scrolls:Arena and Daggerfall
  • XCom: UFO defense (and the underwater version I never finshed)
  • Darklands (what a great game!)

So does anyone have any other recommendations? Classic games I should be playing? Who said DOS was dead?? :D

All those listed games can be run on Windows 95 flawlessly (in most cases and if the PIF is set up properly), so if you want to use a GUI instead of DOS you can find an old copy of Win95.

Have fun with that :)

I'm not much of an old DOS gamer but i remember playin a game called Privateer that was a great space flight fighting game. You could get missions or just run a cargo line. Another one of my favorite was Merchant Prince, we always used to get a big group at my grandma's house with my brother and cousins. We would backstab each other and attack each others shipping lines. Ahh good old fun.

I don't know if its a Dos game but I remember playing Mechwarrior 1 as well as DeathTrack way back in the early 90's.

Betrayal at Krondor's one of my favorite DOS games. Somewhat decent replay value.

(weee, old DOS games... Now this is my topic :D)
I would recommend most of Lucas Art's point-n-click games, such as Monkey Island 1 & 2, Loom, Sam'n'Max: Hit the road, Day of the tentacle.
Or, if you'd prefer a more slaughterhouse-race game: Death Rally.
Or, Syndicate wars, a really neat strategy game.

Go to http://www.the-underdogs.org, a lot of reviews of oldies that didn't quite get the spotlight they deserved :)

The best game in the whole, entire world is Kingdom 'o Magic.

Play it and die laughing. You have been warned!

Wow must have been a top of the line in 95. My old 95 has a 2GB Hard drive and a stock sound card.

Coincidentally, I put my old Pentium 75 back together (with some parts from newer computers) only a few days ago. I now have a:

Pentium 75 Mhz
50 Mb ram
6 Gb Hdd
24x cd-rom player
Creative Soundblaster 16

I've installed FreeDOS on it and it's running like a charm... finally I get to try out Flight of the Amazon Queen! (which refused to run on my Windows computer).

PS. I can never recommend "Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers" enough... I just love that game! The old Lucasarts adventures are good. The old Might and Magic games were always fun (clouds of Xeen, darkside of Xeen... stuff like that). And the Quest for Glory games! (yay for the Quest for Glory games).

Privateer like Samson said was great fun. Elder Scrolls was also pretty good. I personally like the original "Master of Orion".

So many great games, so little time. :D I spent the last couple weeks playing through Ultima IV again. Even though it's ancient, it's still a great game. I'm still waiting on my brother to mail me a few games that he has stashed away. Somehow he ended up with all old Sierra adventure games. :x
