It's a distributed computing thing. When you download the application and run it, your computer joins a whole network of computers which utilizes spare processor time to handle research tasks like analyzing compounds. So, when your pc is idle, the spare processing capabilities contribute to the research.
This particular one is researching a cure for cancer.
