I just wanted to mention to anyone who doesn't know there is a WOD united devices team, if you are not familiar with united devices check out thier website, http://www.grid.org basically you run a client on your machine, when you are not using your computer it does cancer research and send the results back to united devices, it's for a good cause and once you set it up you can completely forget about it, our team currently has 30 members, but i'm contributing over 50% of our daily points. So check it out, cancer is something that effects all of us in some way, so it will take all of us to beat it.

I signed up a while back and like Yusen, I strongly suggest that everyone else do the same.

I jut signed up guys, good to see something like this going on.

I used to do this, but my corporate firewall doesn't like the program for some reason, even though it uses normal ports.

I'll join the team with my home pc, though.

Thanks for mentioning this. I've been meaning to for a while now but keep forgetting about it I also finally fixed the link to the WoD group page (on the links page.)

As Yusen said, its really quite easy - download the program, install it and forget about it. It literally does everything else by itself. The project tends to work on a number of different diseases in addition to cancer - it looks like the program is currently working on the smallpox virus.

I still find the whole thing absolutely amazing. This is Star Trek-type technology here. Do a molecular scan to figure out the chemical composition of the disease, then input it into a computer to run simulations until we find a cure. We're a long way from the way they always find a cure in 24 hours on Star Trek, but its still an amazing first step...

That is SO cool! I got it and it's just so neat looking when it's working on stuff.. and it's for such a great cause!

Yeah, i downloaded it, and opted for the cancer research part. However, something weird is that i've got a full 24 hours on it, and it still says its at 0 percent complete. The "currently working on" part of the application section says its still "starting docking run." Anybody know what the deal is?

Shut it down and restart it. If that doesn't work, a reinstall is in order. Sounds like it just got stuck in a loop while downloading the first grid.

i think i got the same problem, ten minutes and 0/100 and 0% etc.

People you should sign up with the seti program out of WC Berkely. after we find the little green guys they will tell us how to cure cancer etc.

That one is pretty normal. It takes a long time for the program to run its computations (especially if you're using your computer at the same time.) It generally takes my PC about 6-8 hours to run one 'block'. One quick way to check if its working or not is to open up the program, then click the second icon in the bottom right corner (the i with a circle around it.) If it has a molecule of some sort displayed, that's what its working on.

Also, if you have a firewall up, make sure you give the program permission to access the internet. It needs it to download the information that it needs to work on and upload the results.

It works after all, a bit slower than i thought

Finally found out the problem. I have a 2.0 gig AMD athlon with 512 RAM, so I'm not really worried much about taxing my resources. However, I'm also running Seti@Home, World of Dreams, and Progress Quest. I used my favorite feature of Windows XP, opened up the task manager, looked at the process section, and found that ALL the processor usage was directed at seti@home, wod, and progquest. 0% was on UDAgent. Um, apparently Windows doesn't allocate processor usage, it just tackles the first thing that comes along like a badger on speed, worries it to death, and waits for the next big job. Um, can anyone say "process priority override?" Now its running fine.
