Trash Can Reward

Well first I must say that I really enjoy WOD and have had a great time playing here so far. However, the one thing I noticed is that almost nothing you make, harvest or loot is sellable. Therefore I thought perhaps this would give the players a nice outlet for all the items we can’t sell .

Trash Cans Rewards

I am sure many of you are familiar with the concept and probably debated over it at one time or another.

For those who may not be as familiar with the concept. A few years back OSI started a "Clean up Britania" campaign. Their purpose was actually to drop item counts to ease up on the servers. This was a time of old OSI housing when you could lock down as many chests as you liked in your house. Therefore players like myself would have 15-20 chests loaded to the top with all kinds of magic items etc.

Anyhow what would happen is you would drop items into the trash can and it would give you a point or two for each item. As the points added up you got the option of selecting a particular reward item from a list. It has been a long time and to be honest I forget what the list was.

So back to WOD, I think that it may be a nice option to add a feature like this. Obviously there would be some work involved in adding such a feature. It would be important to make sure that it does not throw off the balance of the game. Therefore I thought the item list should be things that would not directly affect the game play.

For example:

Furniture Dye Tub
Black Dye Tub
Some type of unique housing addon (like suit of armor or bearskin rug)
Also have a few lower end items, perhaps things like heal bots or cure bots,

Now obviously the list was just to help illustrate my example. I am sure that if this idea was adopted that the staff could come up with a better list. However the point would be that nothing from the trash reward would really offer and swing to game balance like magical weapons etc. Just a series of nice little items that give you a return for all the items you drop in the trash every day.

We've had things like that in the past, if my memory serves me correctly. Of course, I'm in favor of anything that improves the performance of the server. ;) But item count is not too much of a problem right now, so.... I'll let Drocket give you an "official" answer on this one. :)

In the mean time, you can still trash that junk! :D

First problem, and most likely that main problem, would be excessive macroing by a bunch of players. Unless of course it was set up not to give points for player made items. Much in the way the vendors don't buy them.

There's a number of really major problems with the entire idea. The 'Clean Up Britannia' program was one of OSI's worst ideas ever. Well, they've had so many terrible, terrible, terrible ideas its really difficult to rank them, but 'Clean Up Britannia' most likely in the top 10. The top 20, at least. The top 50 worst ideas definitely.

There's really serious problem with rewarding people for getting rid of junk: the instant you stop rewarding them, they're going to start hoarding worse than ever. After all, if they hoard enough crap, I may have to give out prizes again. Its not a good precedent to set.

The second big problem is that it essentially punishes people for NOT hoarding. OSI spent years asking/telling/begging people not to hoard crap because it was bad for the servers. Some people listened and were rewarded by not getting any prizes, while the worst offenders got kewl items out the wazoo. The whole thing wound up being horribly unfair to the 'good' citizens who kept their house clean. (What, you actually listened to us when we asked to to keep itemcount down? SUCKER!) (This is, BTW, the reason Benson only accepts new magic items.)

The third problem is the one already mentioned by Randell: we'd instantly have 20 people online day and night macroing their way to prizes. Rather ironically, the bandwidth they'd be using up is probably a more limited resource than the RAM we'd save from any itemcount reduction that might happen...

So for these items (and probably more if I'd sit down and think about it for a while longer), that sort of program just isn't something that's going to be happening on WoD.

Well certainly reduced server lag is a key benefit of reducing item count. However, I was actually leaning more towards the fact that so many items that you gather from day to day, you throw out simply because you can not sell them. This at least gives you a potential return for those items. Also I agree that if players are going to try an exploit by crafting items just to trash then they should not be point collecting items.

The items that I had in mind were mainly creature loot,and perhaps harvested items (fish, vegitation, resources)

What items in particular, of monster loot I can only think of a handful of items that don't sell, I know fish sell, not postive about vegitatation.

Well it might be nice if magic shovels could be made saleable in the .options list.

First I wrote my last post before reading Drocket's post, and after reading what he said I would agree. I was looking at it more as a way to be able to find a return for all the junk that does not sell. I know if I come back from a hunt I will have a handful of weapons clothing, boots etc that nobody buys.

Anyhow perhaps this may already be possible but what if you could smelt the junk weapons and armor that you loot?

In short I am just trying to find some use for the items that creatures drop

In case you haven't done this yet, make sure you have set your options to sell everything you don't want. It's the dot command .options and in one of the screens there. Most things from a hunt should be sellable to the vendor.

But I do appreciate the interest in keeping the shard clean. Even if we don't have an incentive program, know that you are warming the heart of your server admin. :)

If its not player-made or magical equipment will sell. Magical items are, of course, taken care of by Benson. And you shouldn't get any player made items unless you are hunting people's henchies. =[

again, check out Benson for your low level magics.

The only items that wont sell and aren't useful in large numbers are are orc helms, necro codexes, torches and magic shovels.

Well I tried to sell the basic non-magic weapons that I got off of creatures directly to NPCS. Unless the creature killed a henchman nothing I have tried to sel was the property of one. However, it is probably because I did not setup the sell bag options. I will try that out and it will most likely resolve the issue.

I guess I have just been a little anxious to contribute to the shard, and in this case I did not really think of the possible exploits of the suggestion. For me I have always tried to play honestly so perhaps I overlook the negative possibilities from time to time.

Anyhow I just wanted to say again that this is by far the best shard I have played on so far, and I have played on quite a few (between 6-10) So if there is ever anything I can do to help contribute to the shard let me know. I would be more than willing to help out.

Amen brother. Or make it so they can be given to Benson. I would take 1/2 point each for the little buggers.

Newb to Newb, I have to agree. I've been on just a few shards (OSI only counts as one---they're all equally crummy). I have to say that the staff here are very active especially considering the length of time the shard has been in operation.

I also come up with off the wall ideas never thinking that someone might exploit them for hoarding or megalomania of some other flavor. I'm really pleased that the staff here use their years (literally YEARS) of experience running a shard to keep the place running smooth.

BTW: What powers and privileges does a newbie lord have? ;) Can I command a legion of 10 neophyte mages on a raid against 3 headless? I think we could take them!
