Wolfie's Wolfhunting Tips

With how many people have recently died due to the wolves, I thought I'd post a few tips.
Movement is the key.
∙This should be a given, but if you're not mounted you're dead.
∙Keep your stamina up. You'll be doing a lot of running, so it's important to have a relatively low weight (300-500 stones). Eat one of the higher-level foods. Something with a nutrition of greater than 5. I like jerky because it's cheaper than pizza and still gives pretty good stamina recovery. Also, have a couple full refreshes on hand.
∙Make sure your stamina doesnt drop below 50% - you need to be able to push creatures out of your way.
∙Wolves are fast, but it's always possible to outrun them if you have the stamina. It can take several screens to lose a leader. Just because they're offscreen doesnt mean they dont see you. Keep running a few seconds after you lose their bars.
∙Pick off one or two at a time. With practice, this becomes very easy to do.
∙Since the wolves like to run off when theyre very low on health, you need to be able to catch them without drawing the attention of the other wolves. Run so that you stop about a tile in front of the wolf. If you overshoot, you can't take a swing but at least the wolf turns around so you're not following all over the forest. If they get away, they regenerate health very fast.
∙Since leaders move so much faster, they're more likely to give you trouble getting that last hit in.
∙If you're not able to take a group of wolves comfortably, run enough to lose them, then walk back so that just the edge of the group sees you.
∙Unless you're trying to get a huge pack after you, walk in the forest.
∙A good tactic is to find a relatively clear area and lead wolves one or two at a time over there to kill them. That way you don't have to worry about picking up more wolves when you're chasing down the dying ones.
Then of course all the general hunting guidelines apply: watch your buffs, make sure you've got sufficient regs, bandages, potions, etc.

*One thing I am tired of seeing is people who lead the wolves to the guards to kill them for them. If you cant fight yourself, join a group or hunt somewhere else.

And remember, if you're hunting in a group either split the wolves between the party equally (so damage being recieved isn't focued on one person) or use a combination of buddy healing and attacking the same wolf.

Switching to arrows/bolts when the wolves start running (if you're not a mage) is also a good idea, so that you don't run into another pack or other foes.

Carry a hellfire or lightning wand for that 'last hit'.

Rather easy with a dragon or so...just run around till you run into a pack...well flee as long as there's only leader chasing you. Make your dragon attack it and heal or something and collect the goods, go back and lure those beasts one at a time.

And remember: Don't Start Forest Fires.

I had a pack on me and ran and ran. It didn't matter because once that leader got my scent, that was all she wrote, and down I went. I know I cleared at least 4 and maybe 5 screens, and I still died.

The bottom-line for me is: go slow and don't go alone. I usually go with Kasia, in which case I take Covenant, my mage; or Nia or Ki'Anna, in which case I take Aellius (archer-alchemist) or Pau (pure tank). That has worked the best for me, but I know that Ki'Anna (bard-mage) has done well all on her own.

i know another easy form to kill em,
you can use the moongate to run away, they will folloe you into the moongate but not all, you can kill them one by one, you need to to is separate,
maybe thats a foolish way, but i still say here.

If you do use this method, please make sure you 'take care' of all the mobs that follow you through the moongate. I've been finding a few left-over wolves wandering around Trinsic and other moongates. Remember less-abled characters use moongates too.

OMG! Well said, Wolfie! Now, Of course, all of us have been en-route back to turn in hides and ran smack into the middle of a large pack very near the Abby... but I've seen people leading entire packs back there, on PURPOSE!

Last night, I sat inside the building there, happily turning in the numerous hides I had collected, (I usually wait until I have 100+ before going back), and was interrupted not once, not twice, but THREE times by a certain person, who shall remain un-named, luring wolves back to have the guards kill them for him... I think if the powers that be wanted the guards to "take care" of this incursion, they would have simply spawned 500 guards in Yew, and we would have no quest.

PLEASE stop using the guards to get your pelts for you! If you happen to find yourself in extreme danger, and happen to be close to the Abby, by all means, high tail it up there and get a bit of help from the guards, but people, please... the things I've seen in the past few days have been ridiculous. There are ALWAYS people online who would be more than willing to hunt WITH you and split the hides afterwards. There's no need to "team up" with the town guards...

Yes, Ciara, Ghaleon and I happened to witness the player in question doing what you have described. Ciara advised him against it (he interrupted her at least twice while I was there, and she had quite a lot of hides to turn in), but apparently this player didn't care to listen. We know he was doing this purposely because he kept coming back towards the guards (he did this several times), and a couple of times he even went around the building to make sure the Lt. was taking notice of the wolves. I think this kind of behaviour is rather tacky and rude to the people who just want to turn in their hides and move on. It's also dangerous, for one of those wolves may attack an afk player who was not expecting to get attacked there.

I'd suggest the guard AI be changed to ignore wolfpacks but I'd much rather this player simply stop doing this.

Name the offender.

Hesitation in not stopping unfair play only breeds more malpractice.

Although I owe no courtesy to this player, a general sense of propriety restraints me in this case. Let's just say that for someone who's been so adamant in sustaining the overall deficiencies (shall we say, uselessness?) of his characters, he sure knows how to compensate for his supposed weaknesses (he's got da 'mad skillz').

Hey I don't particularly like Fitz and if he says he's leaving then I'm not going to try and stop him. BUT if he stays then I'm not going to say

I never said I was a kind person. He doesn't fit in here. And a person should not say "I'm leaving!" then be online all the time.
