Character Names

Postby Bassett on Wed Mar 17, 2004 8:04 pm

I thought we musn't name our characters from books, movies or something like that, yet i've seen few players with rather "famous" names, for example: Ima Trader
Sorry to say, i think it's a horrible name :(
There's also few dragonlance-names too.
This is not an insult, i just wonder.

I don't think that Ima Trader would fall under the 'famous names' rule, but it definitely would fall under the 'Don't name yuorself anything stupid' rule. We do change names that we think are stupid, quite often, actually, but since there's not always a GM online, we sometimes don't notice stupid names right away. Anyway, we change them when we see them...

I'm particularly tecthy about the whole naming issue myself. That's why I try to avoid commenting about it.

The comment I can make about it, without getting personally involved is: It'd be nice if the naming rules were more closely enforced. Though, given that the matter is quite difficult to address (and there are like only 2 DMs or something), I can understand why it isn't.

Well, I am probably one of the names referred to, and my personal situation is that this is the name I have been known by on various shards for over 4 years. If the staff came to me and changed my name though, I would defer to their judgement. My personal opinion as to the reason for the rules is to keep people from using trademarked names from fiction such as Harry Potter or similar names, which I agree with. Some of the lesser known names from fiction and real life are harder to enforce, and in reality, there are always going to be people with similar names. It is a fact that we live in a finite universe, and some names are more or less common than others.

Someone on this shard has a character with a name from a book but according to him it was coincidence. The name would be hard to make up without knowing the book but I trust him. Its his first and last name that are the same

A few years back, we were discussing offensive names and everyone on the shard was invited to list any character names they did not like. Predictably, virtually every name out there offended or irritated SOMEONE, including all five of mine.
Once again, bless our admins for being willing to deal with it.
