WoD Fundraiser

Postby Laephis on Fri Oct 24, 2003 1:58 am

Over the years we've had a number of people express a desire to help the shard, either monetarily or in other ways. As an admin team we've always been very apprehensive about asking for donations. This is a free shard and we do not expect compensation for our efforts. Furthermore, we strive to make sure things are kept as fair and unbiased as possible. We don't play favorites, and would not accepts donations from someone looking for phat lewt in exchange for donating. Finally, I want to be held accountable. I do not want people sending me money and having no idea where that cash is being spent. I could be going on cruises around the world for all you know, and that's not cool.

With those disclaimers out of the way, I'd like to try something that hopefully allows people to contribute to shard without sacrificing integrity. There are a couple upgrades that would really benefit the shard. I'm going to be posting them over the next couple months (if all goes well with this first one). When we reach the goal, I'll end the fundraiser and purchase the equipment.

The first upgrade that I'd like to attempt is a SCSI hard drive and controller. This would give us two benefits: speed and reliabilty. SCSI drives are much faster than their IDE counterparts, and have big, fat 5 year warranties. The items I'm looking at will run about $250-300. I'm requesting Paypal as the contribution method. My Paypal account is laephis@yahoo.com . I'll keep everyone posted concerning our progress. Hopefully we'll have a new drive setup in a couple months! :)

Joining PayPal is easy, relatively painless and free.

Paypal doesn't quite work in finland, you can withdraw funds from the account but not add funds to account from finnish banks.

I knew it wouldn't take long for the Paypal issues/complaints to happen. ;) I'm actually not a big fan of Paypal myself, but right now it's the easiest way to exchange funds for the majority of people. One of the biggest advantages is the privacy: I don't have to post my name/address to the internet. (There are a lot of crazy people out there and I'd rather not be stalked by some disgruntled former player.) I realize that some of you are not able or willing to use Paypal, and I really sympathize. If anyone has other suggestions I'll be glad to hear them.

I will gladly help out anyone and everyone who wants to donate to the Laephis Fund but can't use PayPal. I'll make darn sure Laephis gets every darn penny! (less a small handling fee, of course.)

Just make out those checks and money orders to John R. Da...

You aren't falling for this, are you?

Yeah, I think that Atei has a sinister character ingame. :P

There is another online payment service called C2IT... http://www.c2it.com. When I used it ('til about a year and a half ago), it was free to send and receive money. Not sure what the status is now. Someone might find that one a little easier.

Another thought came to mind. Does WoD have any equipment that it might be able to list on ebay or some other auction site, to help offset the cost a little? I mean, I am very willing to help out, don't get me wrong.

Or yet, another idea... do we have WoD players that have equipment or other stuff they would be willing to sell on an auction site and have the procedes go to WoD? We could use laephis@yahoo.com as the payment receiver. naaahhhh ... that sounds a little messy .. never mind.

Just something to chew on...

Guess there is not much that is easier than just sending money. *shrugs*

I wasn't planning on posting this so soon, but we have reached our goal. Thanks to a very generous player we now have the funds needed to upgrade the hard drive. :D I'll be purchasing the equipment this week, but it probably won't get installed until next week (or a bit later). I'll keep everyone posted concerning that since it will involve a bit of downtime. Thanks so much!

This is SO typical of this place. Someone says I need XYZ, and suddenly someone comes up and gives you XYZ and PDQ. It's a great feeling to share online space with folks like you. Thanks for the warm-fuzzy. I'll try to pass it on>
