Player vs. Player tagging

How feasable is it to have a command (like .private) that alters the player's state on the .online menu to have [pvp] attached to the end of their name? The ramifications being that a player that did so would be considered consenting to any form of PVP while doing so.

I don't know whether the PvP market in WoD is big, small or non-existent, but it seems like an interesting and controversial enough consideration that isn't entirely without merit.

That would give the current suffixes players could have to be:

[young]
[dead]
[private]
[PVP]

Obviously, young players (and arguably, private players) be in PVP mode, because that would cause more trouble than it's worth. Also, there would be the grey area between PVP and PKing, which is always touchy ground. But if ever there was something to spice up WoD, it would be a clear and conscious decision to have PvP in the game.

I'm not particularly adept at monster-bashing, or even player-bashing (Admin-bashing, on the other hand, I have down pat  ). But the few times I've played on a PvP enabled shard, and the time I've spent on Neverwinter has shown me that if you cater to a specific, considerate player base, and have a vigilant authority to back up any infractions, PvP is an awesome roleplaying tool. Some might say that PVP is 'allowed' in WoD as it is now, but any time I've ever seen it justified is as an "accidental" death. That, and the arena is only very rarely used.

Post comments or criticisms on this topic. It's really quite interesting!

I would love to have this in the game. It would make a big change and people would come back to try it out and might get hooked again like they used to.

I think this would be an interesting idea and could give the older players something to do, add some some zest to life

I can really only see 2 directions that this could go: one possibility is that it doesn't catch on (making it a waste of coding effort), or two, that it does catch on, making WoD somewhere that I'm not sure I would be interested in playing. I'm not real big on the idea of coding things that would make me want to quit :P

(note that I'm not saying that its actually a bad idea: just that its something that I personally strongly dislike...)

What do you dislike about it, and why?

I've just played too many PvP games, and every last one of them has invariably wound up leading to huge amounts of arguments and hatred (the kind of stuff that makes WoD's worst day look like a calm discussion about what restraunt to eat at.) The fact that the PvP is optional never really matters in this (and actually, often makes it worse. Then you have the joy of someone who PKs 18 other people, then switches to PvP- before anyone can take revenge.) I don't think I've ever seen a PvP-based UO shard that hasn't completely self-imploded within a year...

Ackadia being a great case in point. You think WoD msg boards are too full of "flames" for your taste? Just imagine if everyone who likes to complain on the boards would also have the ability to harass you in-game. Yup, sounds like paradise . . . for jerks.

I posted a half-reply to this on the Questions for Discussion thread on the General Forum, that hit on the issue of PvP specifically. Probably would have been better here, but a good post is a good post, and it ties in well.

Just thought I'd do a shameless plug so the flow of the argument could continue.
