Question on classes

Postby Vyktor on Thu May 06, 2004 6:01 am

I was wondering what skills are rare but needed in group hunts? I'm looking to start a new character but want him to be something thats not all too common yet useful.
Any ideas?

Not too sure, but I got the feeling the other night during the [controlled] invasion, that Cel's bow, although not doing quite so much damage as it normally does(those things were just SICKLY strong), was fairly helpful. On group hunts, especially vs. non-casters, you can start shooting things from several screens away, or the moment they target you, making the archer a perfect scout- leading MOBs right back to the waiting blades of the melee guys in front. I also have hiding and stealth on her, which came in VERY handy when they massed on me- very little armor so as not to lower dex. There are a lot of people who have archery as a secondary skill, but few who spec it in prime, and lemme tell ya, with a nice buff and a Nature's Blessing, 120% archery can sure put a dent in even the toughest of MOBs.
Also, you might think about a tamer/mage. I know, there's a TON of us out there, but large group hunts can always use another set of claws and teeth up front to chew on the baddies, plus a mage to keep the melee people healthy. Anyway, these, of course, are just a couple suggestions. Hopefully others can provide you with some more alternatives. :) Happy Hunting!

I always thought that pets (and henchmen) were always a no-no on large group hunts.

Hmmm, news to me... On the hunts I've been on, my dragon was usually the first on the front lines, with me in the back slinging spells... guess it's all a matter of the particular group's opinion on the subject.

This issue amongst others are discussed here: http://wodman.serveftp.net/wodman.php?m=201&menu=20106

Also there is probably a fair bit of information in there that may help people trying to decide on skills for questerchars.

A good general guideline written by a very experienced player and compiled from a vast number of quests and discussions with fellow WoDians can be found in the Manual by clicking the New Player/Rules and Guidelines/Quest Guide links.

While this is a general guide and not meant to cover every exigency of every situation, it contains common sense considerations and time proven strategies.

In my own experience, pets wreak havoc on quests. They create lag, obscure the opponents, distract other players and potentially can turn a good quest into either a nightmare or a fluff.

On the other hand, they can be valuable, front rank, discardable tanks as well. They can soak up a lot of punishment and deal out a considerable amount as well. As long as their masters regard them as disposable tools that can be ressed afterwards, they can be useful in specific situations.

As a general rule, don't bring your pet to quests! However, if a specific group, or clique as they are sometimes called, decides pets are ok then go for it!

Getting back to Vyktor's original question...

Archery was the first thing to come to mind. The ranged attacks are quite helpful vs. mages and enemy archers. As you are probably aware, chasing mobs is an invitation to death. Archers can take out those mobs at a distance and there is no need to chase.

Also, healers are always important on group hunts or quests. That is generally a mage who concentrates on healing rather than attacking.

Finally, leaders (without the henchies) to taunt the mobs off the mages and archers. Nothing is nicer than to be plunking away with your bow and having all the mobs distracted by leaders. Your bow is doing chunks of damage but the mob is too busy to do anything about you. It rocks!

Any or all of the above can be quite useful in any hunting situation.

Good luck!

Well I did think about an archer but since im almost always a bit laggy im not that good a runner :P
What about a bard? I havent seen many of those around. Wouldnt they be useful against big tough MOBS?

They are nice in group hunts, but they are kind of frowned upon at quests, (not nice to bard all the seer placed MOBs on each other.) My bard is also a mage so if he gets caught up in a quest/seer event he can fall back on that.

Anyway, a bard in a group hunt is nice for the tougher mobs yes, but without them being marked as provoked your friends may still attack them, negating your bard stuff. IMO, Bards are more of a solo/duo hunting character.

I was thinking of the same thing awhile, that is having a quest only character. I was gonna give him

Primes: archery/tactics/healing
Secondaries: magery/MR/macefighting

This way he could heal himself and others really well while sitting back and hitting the MOBS.

Never got around to it though, all my character slots are full.
