Keeping WoD Alive...elsewhere...

Postby ShadowStone on Wed Sep 08, 2004 5:14 pm

Okay, we can all agree it's the people that make WoD what it is. So why not just continue onto another game? Yeah, we'd have to put up with the a-holes and jerks, but I'm sure we could persevere. Some games that come to mind right off of the bat are Guild Wars or World of Warcraft. Anyone else have any suggestions?

For talking of entirely different games... the only one that comes to mind is NWN.

the only problem with moving onto another game is that they all seem focussed on PK type activity which rather seems to undermine what we are all about (at least to me). i am trying out wragg marsh a bit but i don't think i am going to stay there. neon colours don't really appeal and it does seem a very monte haulish sort of place.

I'll probably be getting into new MMORPGs as they're released. Perhaps that new Chip and Dale MMORPG.

Unfortunately, my computer is getting rather old and cannot handle the newer games.

Several of us oldbies (if I qualify as an oldbie yet!)do have accounts on Wragg Marsh, but although the people there are great, and I do plan to log in from time to time to say hi to the WoDians who have been frequenting there lately, I have to admit, I am with Ehran.

I really don't like the garish colors common on many private shards (dyeable horses and what-not), and another thing I don't like is that they seem almost completely item based. I mean, from what I've noticed, skill counts for almost nothing - if you don't have all the super-uber gear, the game is nearly unplayable even with maxed skills.

I know we all say that it is the people who make the game - and that IS true to a very large extent - but I have to admit, although I love my fellow WoDians, I still just can't seem to get into the other shards we've tried. In my humble opinion, AoS ruined the game.

As you say, the people there are great, but some of the colors are a bit loud =\

I won't claim there are no loud colors, but Montis Draconis is noticably more subdued both in terms of visuals and player/mob power levels.

and another thing I don't like is that they seem almost completely item based. ...

It is true that the AoS setup is very item centric, it is not going to be something that appeals to everyone, I find it to be a fairly exciting system. Combats tend to be fast and fairly brutal. No standing in a swarm of mobs and just waiting for them to die.

Maybe I misunderstand but it all depends on who is doing the scripting. AoS doesn't have to be item-centric, it can rely on skills as well. Especially if you are running a RunUO shard, everything is customizable to fit your taste in play. On the test shard I have, at first it didn't matter if you have plate armor, you still got swamped by MOBs that you never really had to be so careful with on WoD. The only way to take them was with uber-equipment. But, with a bit of adjustment to MOB skill and stat levels, that leveled out.

So, basically, "out there" you are going to find a wide variety of shards and it all depends on the shard owner's taste as to how it operates.

My goodness this is shocking news that WOD is closing.
I have not been on for some time but there are some folks that may still remember me.

If you are looking for another shard I would highly recommend you check out this place

http://www.mysticrusaders.com/lostrealms/eng.html

their forum:
http://www.forum.mysticrusaders.com/

They have a kind and helpful staff, mature players, many things similar to WOD but many wonderfully different things too.

Please all be safe and take care,

Well, Bayn, you would prolly know better than I - I know nothing about scripting, I admit. I was under the impression that items were central to AOS because the shards I've tried seem to be extremely big on buffed items - and when I say buffed, I don't mean "magery" OR "swordsmanship" - I mean each item can literally have a long list of buffs on it. In fact, this is why my husband finally lost interest in OSI. As a person who enjoys pvp (and only plays occasionally), he just could no longer compete with the people who have super-uber gear. His skill means nothing since they introduced AOS.

So, since it wasn't just the player run shards, but OSI as well, that have made the game all about possessions instead of skill, I thought AOS was to blame. If that isn't true, then I retract my statement and will say instead: SO far, I have not found an AOS shard that I like, as the ones I've tried all seem to require extremely over-powered gear in order to hunt what we on WoD wouldn't even consider a challenge here.

Well, you could be right. I know that is is definitely possible to have major item buffs. Weapons can have properties and methods that actually allow them to "grow" in strength as time goes on. I guess a lot of people like that sort of thing. I don't know if it is an integral part of AOS but at least on my test server it isn't! :)
